U.S. complains after two of its pilots were injured 'by lasers pointed by Chinese nationals near Djibouti'

Two American pilots suffered eye injuries after Chinese nationals allegedly pointed lasers at their planes near Djibouti.

The United States has formally complained to China after a number of incidents in recent weeks, the Pentagon said on Thursday.

The U.S. military has been grappling with lasers being pointed at aircraft for decades. However, the incidents highlight the concern the United States has about a Chinese military base just miles from a critical U.S. base, Camp Lemonnier, in Djibouti.

'They are very serious incidents ... We have formally démarched the chinese and we've requested the Chinese investigate these incidents,' Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White told reporters.

The Pentagon says reports from pilots indicate that on three occasions the lasers were military grade and came from the Chinese base nearby.

A U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that in one incident last month two pilots in a C-130 suffered minor eye injuries

The US also issued a notice to airmen 'to exercise caution when flying in certain areas in Djibouti," which "was issued due to lasers being directed at US aircraft on a small number of separate occasions over the last few weeks,' according to the notice obtained by CNN.

'During one incident, there were two minor eye injuries of aircrew flying in a C-130 that resulted from exposure to military-grade laser beams, which were reported to have originated from the nearby Chinese base,' the notice continued.

Djibouti is strategically located at the southern entrance to the Red Sea on the route to the Suez Canal.

Djibouti hosts a U.S. military base that is home to about 4,000 personnel, including special operations forces, and is a launch pad for operations in Yemen and Somalia.
