There was a time when everybody in the West was gung-ho about China, thinking they would transform—like we see in India

They had the same nonsense about China. Right now, they have realized that is not going to happen. So, remember one thing, there were people who were very gung-ho about China and now they have realized better. They are still not in denial to the extent that they say, "Look, China is taking a lead over us and we need to catch up." But as far as India is concerned, Fareed Zakaria and Nikki Haley have been two people who have consistently supported a close association with India and criticized targeting

India on various other issues, because they say this is a very important relationship. So at least admire that. All these other guys, especially the ones associated with the Sangh and others. They’ve all gone into their shells. They have gone inside.

当年他们也期待中国。现在他们终于明白，这事不会发生。有一点要记住：曾经很多人看好中国，如今他们看清现实了。但他们还没有到坦然承认 “中国已经领先我们，我们必须追赶” 的地步。

不过说到印度，费里德・扎卡里亚和尼基・黑利这两个人，一直主张和印度紧密合作，反对在各类议题上针对印度，他们认为印美关系至关重要，这点至少值得肯定。其他很多人，尤其是和印度国民志愿服务团有关联的那批人，现在全都闭口不谈了。

奥巴马曾经提出 G2 方案，当时被中国拒绝；现在有人认为中国对此感到后悔，因为 G2 类似当年美苏格局，会牺牲印度的利益。他们判断中美之间的矛盾很难调和，不会像美苏那样管控分歧；当年美苏达成妥协的时候，印度利益受损，所以有人觉得中美持续对立反而对印度有利。

印度现在从美国等国获取技术、国防装备，目的是制衡中国；但印度也可以考虑利用这个局面获取中国技术。对话里提到印度 iPhone 只是在班加罗尔组装，本土缺少精细制造能力、产业工人也没有配套能力。他们认为很多印度人喊着要追上中国，想法很不切实际，建议印度人去实地考察中国的工业走廊。

Why India cannot beat China because China was not trying to beat America or Europe, but to make every Chinese successful by being educated, not in poverty and can fulfill their own aspirations in life. If India starts to focus on improve every of 1.4 billion Indians to be prosperous, then is possible for India to beat China and the West, or else is just 20% of Indians successful while remaining 80% still poor compared to any developed economies.

印度为什么追不上中国？因为中国当初的目标不是打败美国或是欧洲，而是让每一个中国人接受教育、摆脱贫困，实现自己的人生理想。如果印度专心让14亿国民都过上富足的生活，才有可能追上中国和西方国家。不然到头来只会是20%的印度人富裕，剩下80%的人，对比发达国家依旧贫困。
