Americans Are Changing Their Minds About China — Here’s Why

In an interview conducted on May 4, 2026, Laura Silver joins Steve Orlins to discuss the data on how American perceptions of China have changed over the past year.

Americans’ views toward China are changing, according to a recent Pew Research Center report published this April: today, 27 percent of Americans have a positive opinion of China, up six percentage points from last year and nearly double the share from 2023.

Amid several notable findings in the survey, some of the most striking are:

Confidence in Chinese President to do the right thing regarding world affairs has increased four percentage points since last year and has roughly doubled since 2023.
When asked whether China is a partner, enemy, or competitor of the United States, fewer Americans now describe China as an enemy than in 2025, though most still view it as a competitor.
Slightly fewer Americans now than last year say China benefits from trade at the expense of the United States.

One thing is true, Americans are exposed to propganda every day, they are very good at pointing out propaganda in other countries but don't see it when it is used on them.

Price of cars in Hungary are "abusrdly low". If this isn't an indicator of just how good American propaganda is I don't know what is. It has Americans feel they should always overpay for old, unreliable technology just so the manufacturers and dealers can eat steak.

Really? I don't think the Chinese give an F for what the people in US think of them. They are bent on improving all the technologies which can improve their standard of living of her people. It is only the West that keeps on asking and judging Chinese leadership whereas the majority of her people just accept their leadership which is bent on improving technologies to make China more competitive to her economy. Instead of spending time to find out the opinion of Americans on China, why don't you work on improving your own competitive edge.

真是这样吗？中国人根本不在乎美国民众如何看待自己，一心钻研各类民生科技，全力提升国民生活水平。只有西方国家总爱肆意评判中国领导层，而中国民众都十分拥护一心强国富民、提升国家经济实力的执政方针。与其费心打探美国人对华看法，不如专心提升自身国家的综合竞争力。
