Last year’s Beiing humanoid robot half-marathon saw poor performance, with most robots suffering malfunctions like crashing, overheating or collapsing, and only six out of 21 completing the 21-kilometer race at a far slower pace than human runners.

The 2026 second edition, taking place this Saturday in Beiing Etown, has expanded greatly in scale, with over 300 robots from 100 teams, nearly five times more than last year. Nearly 40% of robots can run fully autonomously via sensors and Beidou high-precision positioning, alongside human runners on the same course under stricter rules limiting human intervention.

human handlers should not be allowed. if the robot falls, it should be able to get up on its own. this is part of the game. the robot should also be able to change its own battery without human intervention. or the handler should also be another robot too, so at least the battery swap should be automated. no humans involved. there are EV battery swap stations. there should also be robot battery swap stations with autonomous battery swaps.

We already know the robots can perform better than humans in certain tasks, and running would be one such task... If not now, they will outrun us eventually, right?
