Spain: 39 killed after high-speed trains collide; videos show passengers crawling out of windows

At least 39 people were killed, and a dozen others were injured after a high-speed train derailed and collided with an oncoming train on Sunday evening in southern Spain.

Passengers reportedly used emergency hammers to break windows, and some were able to walk away without serious injuries. Videos shared by people at the scene showed passengers crawling out through windows to escape the wreckage, with several carriages left leaning at an angle.

Witnesses described the collision as feeling like an earthquake, with some passengers also reporting smoke inside the carriages and requiring medical attention, Euro News reported.

周日晚间，西班牙南部发生一起高速列车脱轨事故。一列脱轨列车与对向驶来的列车相撞，造成至少39人死亡、十余人受伤。

据报道，乘客使用安全锤砸碎车窗，部分乘客得以自行撤离，未受重伤。现场人员发布的视频显示，乘客从车窗爬出，逃离残骸，多节车厢严重倾斜。

据欧洲新闻台报道，目击者称列车相撞时的冲击力堪比地震。部分乘客表示，车厢内当时冒出浓烟，他们已接受医疗救治。

The tail end of the Malaga–Madrid service carrying around 300 passengers went off the rails near Cordoba at about 7.45 pm (local time), crossed onto the opposite track and slammed into a Madrid–Huelva train with approxmately 200 passengers onboard, according to rail operator ADIF.

Spain's Transport Minister Oscar Puente confirmed the casualties as rescue operations continued at the site. Puente said the death toll could rise as authorities work to confirm additional victims.

The hospitals of the Community of Madrid and the 112 emergency teams are on standby following the tragic accident in Cordoba and are at the disposal of the Andalusian Regional Government," said Madrid's regional president, Isabel Diaz Ayuso.

A BNSF grain had one of its grain hoppers derail on straight track the same moment as another BNSF crude oil train was passing by. Both train collided and a large fire occurred. This accident happened because one of the wheels on the grain hopper had a defect, the train car went through a recent inspection and the car was also recently built but the damaged wheel was not caught because the damage was not visible on the surface, instead it was a deeper internal defect.

这类脱轨事故并非首次发生，比如北达科他州的卡塞尔顿脱轨案。当时一列伯灵顿北方圣太菲铁路公司的运粮列车，在直行轨道上突然有一节运粮车厢脱轨，恰好另一列同公司的运油列车迎面驶过，两车相撞后引发了大火。事故原因是那节运粮车厢的一个车轮存在缺陷，车厢虽是新车且刚完成检修，但车轮的损伤在表面看不到，是深层的内部故障，所以没被检测出来。

@MartinAston00 I highly doubt it as a railfan, it was most likely caused by some sort of human error, Could have been the driver wasn't paying attention and possibly went over the speed limit, or hit an object. It also could have been due to a failure on the train that caused it to either go too fast, or something completely broke, causing the derailment. It could have been due to the track itself, there have been instances of track that had recent repairs still fail due to human error or bad materials. For now, we just don't know.

Another example of a damaged wheel or wheel axle causing a derailment is the Eschida train derailment, it's actually Germanys worst high speed rail accident killing over double if not triple than the amount in this incident.
