Thane accident: 5 dead, several injured after falling from overcrowded local train; traffic hit

THANE: At least five passengers died and several others were injured after falling from an overcrowded local train between Diva and Mumbra stations in Thane district on Monday.
The incident occurred around 9.30 am when two trains, travelling in opposite directions, crossed each other.
According to officials, passengers standing on the footboards of both the up and down trains collided during the crossing.
“Several passengers lost their balance due to the jolt and fell off,” said Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer, Central Railway.

Eight passengers reportedly fell during the incident, with five declared dead on arrival at nearby hospitals and others sustaining injuries of varying severity.
An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact sequence of events and to identify the trains involved.
In response to the accident, the Railway Board has decided that only air-conditioned local trains with automatic door closure systems will be procured for the Mumbai suburban network moving forward.
The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai has also been instructed to examine the feasibility of retrofitting exsting non-AC locals with automatic doors to improve commuter safety.
据报道,事故中有八名乘客坠落,其中五人抵达附近医院时被宣布死亡,其他人不同程度受伤。

Automatic closing doors will not work for population of mumbai. Train has time hardly one minute to stop at each station due to cover people at peak hours. Office starting timings should be spread across 1-2 hours. Then peak time crowd can be avoided.

What is there to investigate? Its common knowledge that people travel holding the door, whole body out- even if there is space inside. Strict rules that train will not move unless everybody is inside. People try adventure, but at times due to crowd, people are forced to do that. Make that illegal.

No one has to be blamed for such kind of accidents. Mumbai locals are unable to cope with exting population. Besides adding more trains SCATTERED WORKING HOURS at offices and factories may be of some. Many nations (even developed ones like America, Germany, Australia) have scattered starting time. There are no FIX TIMINGS like India (say 9 to 5 for office's and 8 to 4.30 for factories).

Railways can't be blamed for the incident. People are very casual and don't take their safety seriously, often take short cut by crossing railway tracks or pull chain just before the railway station and jump so that they can walk to their destination.

All local trains (at least slow trains) in Mumbai suburban (Central lines) routes should be made double-decker. Let people sit and comfortably travel, even if it needs to bring down the speed of trains. Tendency to catch fast trains for short distances (e.g. between Kalyan-Thane, Thane-Vikhrolior Ghatkopar, etc.) should be discouraged by introducing more slow trains between Kalyan-Thane and Thane-Kurla).

Complete the remaining 350 KM of Bombay Metro projects on a war footing. Half of them are just pillars gathering fungus and mold. Finish them so that the Bombay suburban system load will be reduced at least a bit. Work on them day and night. Every time I visit Bombay none of these projects has anyone working on them. Such a shame.
