China Tests World's First 35,000-ton Multi-unit Hook-free Train
The world's first 35,000-ton, hook-free group train completed a successful trial run in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on December 8.

Traditionally, several locomotives are at the front to pull a long train, however, the first mechanical coupler after the engines has to bear the brunt of all the trains. With wireless, all the separate trains can move together without mechanical coupler. Significantly improve throughput and efficiency.
morepork559
Thanks for the explanation, but does this mean that each rail car has its own engine? How do they move together without being mechanically coupled?
Notch8AndSand
@morepork559 so, from reading some articles, they basically had 7 conventional freight trains that accelerate and brake together. Idk why they made such a big deal about couplers. AAR style couplers can pull 100+ car coal trains with 0 problems
DebottamBhattacharya
That is not what's happening here.
Multi-unit trains have locomotives scattered along its length (remote controlled by the driver at the front loco). Until now they used to be coupled and the signals were passed via cables. Now they can be controlled via radio.
This makes sorting a bit easier at the marshaling yard. No need to repeatedly couple and uncouple them.
Jerry-sf3vd
Each individual train unit has its own power and braking systems, and synchronized wirelessly.
AndikaKhairilAkbar
@KYL134 The Soviet Union was the first to this with 4 locomotives with radios.
gelinrefira
@Notch8AndSand Ohh that makes so much more sense. So it's distributed locomotion, so the stress is more evenly distributed and it is kind of like drive by wire (or wireless) that controls all the distributed locomotives together.
Notch8AndSand
@gelinrefira its completely seperate trains. Maybe they are controlling all of them remotely, but i bet there were drivers on each of the 7

OMG. This is innovation

We have leaves on the line in the UK, but they’re working on it.

I cannot see how this technology works, and how it can help to improve what. Can you show some more specific information about this technology so that we can appreciate it?
JWscandi
it means it no longer uses mechanical hooks to connect them together, instead using only electrical signal to hold and control them including the brakes. this is amazing! which means unlimited cargo can be hauled.
58buru
@JWscandi your comment simply restates what the video shows. Question was how the technology works. How are the individual train cars moving (powered) if not being pulled mechanically? Is the entire railway line powered electrically to move the cars like a downtown streetcar or is power from the train's engine(s) somehow being converted to electricity?
JWscandi
@58buru dude, i just furnished what the news provided with my own understanding.
"Question was how the technology works" - it's FUNNY to ask such a question in a news! this is NOT a documentary!
it's clearly mentioned the rail is NOT electrified...hence it can b concluded the electric source is from the locomotive.
just like our car steering, from the mechanical control to now drive by wire steering, using electric + software.
do u get the picture?

Ok so I googled "China train with no hooks" and although the details are sparse, the internet seems to believe they're using magnetic technology similar to exsting maglev passenger trains that levitate above a train track using powerful magnets. In this case, the train could be powered by a traditional engine but the cars connected via magnets and controlled electronically. That's all I needed to know
stanstantalent.5605
What does this even mean? Like a freight emu/dmu??
bradgolding6847
By the term hooks, do you mean couplers?

A 10000 dollar wireless solution works almost as well as a 10 dollar cable. Multiple failure points to gain nothing.
returniniman1997
Simple words, they are digitally connected but physically are not

I wonder when we gonna see heavy freight EMU, as of now only some container haulers

moving block signaling and maybe remote control of locomotives. what stunning advances that no one else has ever done

for what everything chin builds is not to satisfy the economic need but only to show the world how good they are
everything the build is copied from the west including trains
china 's railway system is a perfect example it is over built and runs wjay below capacity
in addition an imploding economy does not need such high train capacity in the first place
tanhuevien9295
It's really confusing if it uses electricity then why does the tractor still smoke, and what is the purpose of the tractor when it doesn't pull any cars, or the connection point between the tractor and the cars is magnetic. It can keep a safe distance between the cars without a hook. China is super.

Which means it still has to go through the 'usual' accident/disaster learning from mistakes that lead to the accident/disaster and future accident/disasters and accompanied learning cycles.
1ycan-eu9ji
okay but every cart must have an engine then
markpowder4664
I don’t see innovation. Ok, decoupling between cars are probably based on electrical lock with wifi. And it make more easy to decouple, while it pose also a risk of interference. In regards of train length also without this you can connect together 5 trains and will run in sinhron.
