WE Spent 48 hours in the WORLD'S most advanced city
We visit China's most futuristic city, also known as China's Silicon Valley, exploring a city which is leading the world in technology. Shenzhen is a city which was just a small fishing village in the 1970s but has grown into a tech powerhouse of 18 million people in 2025. We use Shenzhen's drone delivery service, we use a driverless tax's, view a robotics showroom and the incredible lights this city has when night falls!

Living in Tokyo, and every time when I go to China I feel Japan is stuck in 1990s

Really huh? Thought Japan is comparable to China in lifestyle technology. Thx for the update.

they stuck in post WW2 period

I lived in Tokyo too, had a house around Asakusa but sold it. And I totally agree with you.

I have been to both countries this year and even germany feels more Advanced. The Hype around Japan doesn’t do it’s Justice. Beautiful Country, good trains and clean but apart from that? Try buy a metro ticket without cash lol (SUICA doesn’t work on most phones except iPhones)

Japan has missed 3 technological revolutions since then: Internet, smart phone, and AI

True. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, we thought Tokyo lived in the future, and now it is stagnated in the 1990s.

Japan was living in the future (90s) in the 70s due to the bubble. Now, they're stuck in the 90s, not able to move on from the glory days.
Koenigg99
Japan has been stuck in the year 2000 since 1980.

Whereas Japan were living in the 1990s in the 1980s. The great surge and rise of Japan in the 60s/70/80s - and the juddering halt afterward, shows you cannot always assume when you visit a country on such an upswing that will continue on that trajectory indefinitely. Its quite possible that in 20 years time if you revisit China it will feel similalrly constrained. It will certainly have its own demographic headwinds increasing by then - not to mention headwinds from it being less than free now than it has been over the previous 30 years. It's sobering to know all empires surge, plateau and then crumble. All of them. It's just a matter of how long it all takes.

in the 80s japan was living in the 2000s. in 2025 japan is still living in the 2000s

Wow... imagine being an indian, seeing Japan and then china

I absolutely agree with you that if you have been to or live in Tokyo, you feel Japan is stuck in 1990s after visiting China. I have had the same feeling because I have been to Tokyo first, and after some years to Shanghai and more recently Shenzhen.

What is also impressive is the speed with which China adapts new technologies

They put them into the market first, then look at the subsequent effects, and then use laws and regulations to restrict the problems discovered. Rather than restricting it with a bunch of laws in advance, that might stifle a future industry.

They don't have to deal with bureaucracy and councils to get things done. Look at America, they're still debating about whether to build a train from 10 years ago. China is more like "Actions speak louder than words"

I am super China supporter but I am bit worried that terminator crap gonna happen here first.

I think only americans thinks that Seoul or Tokyo are cities from the future. This mentality is from the past, both of this cities are stagnated, around the world is already changed, China have at least 3 futuristic mega cities. Here in Brazil we already saw many times on TV Chengdu, Chongqing and Shenzhen are very well know for being technological.
AncientEnigmas88
Not true. Both Tokyo and Seoul are older more established cities so it's obviously harder for them to grow at the same rate but both unbelievably advanced and higher per capita gdp and cmon you're talking about Tokyo. They are still growing at 2 to 3% annually and are truly cities of the future and yes I'm American and yes I've been to China, south Korea and Japan

I prefer Japan or S Korea, they have all of these techs plus more interesting customs, history. Besides in China the government knows all about you, from the time you wake up to how much money you have.

Shenzhen is home to companies like BYD, Huawei, Tencent, and DJI, so it’s hardly surprising that when you visit, it feels like you’ve stepped into 2050.
raymondqiu8202
But the percentage of people that are employees of those companies must still be small. Those companies only hire people with highly specialized skills so what are the jobs of the other 90% of people that live there? There's 17 million people that live there

My family tried the drone delivery in Shenzhen last month. We had so many orders, and we received four drop deliveries one by one. It was really cool.

Native Beiinger here. Having studied and lived in Hong Kong and LA for a total of 8 yrs, I chose to return to Beiing 10 yrs ago, and it was one of the best decisions in my life. Our country is not without its own problems, yet we are proud of her, since it is everyone's hard work that got us where we are now. Glad that you guys had a great time here, and welcome back anytime

Drone delivery is also available on the Great Wall of China, the Badaling section. Can also deliver emergency medicines if required. Looking forward to using this service on my first visit to China next year (the food delivery, not the medications, lol). Hi from New Zealand

Such amazing technology but also a bit frightening at the same time. But maybe i am sometimes slow to adapt to changes especially with mobile phone technology which i am still not really comfortable with. You look at Shenzhen and then u look at cities/towns in UK. Must be 200 years difference between the two with creaking infrastructure here. Ok maybe i exaggerate lol.

My wife comes from Shenzhen. Been there quite a few times over the last decade or so and seen huge change in just that time. Huge fun and some beautiful parks and walks as well, beside the tech.
