What's it actually like to end up in a Chinese hospital? How are you treated, how advanced is China's healthcare system? I'm rushed into hospital in Shenzhen and I share with you my first ever Chinese hospital experience. How does it compare to the USA and UK?

If you’ve ever been to China, you know no one speaks English. We got to this really fancy hospital, and I thought, “Are you sure this is a hospital?” Ben pointed at the sign out front, so we went in. There was a smartly dressed woman at the counter, and I said, “Ben, I think this is a private place—it’s going to cost a fortune.” We used our phones to translate and explain what was wrong. Right away, she said, “All right, let’s do a CT scan.” I mentioned my knee, and she added, “Let’s do a CT scan on that too.” I thought, “Oh god, money, money, money,” but we’re insured, so it didn’t matter—we just went ahead.

I also saw someone for my eyes—an eye doctor, I guess. They tested if I could read things far away, but it was different from the UK. Normally, you read letters, but here I had to point which way the “e” was facing. Turns out, it’s because I don’t speak Chinese—when I saw a Chinese person doing it, they were reading out letters. They blew air in my eyes, shined lights—never had such an intense eye test, but it was good. They checked everything and said I have amazing eyesight. I’ve had similar tests before in the UK when I had a mini-stroke, so it felt familiar. They gave me a paper with a dot to check for squiggles, which would mean something’s wrong.

The whole time, a lady stayed with me, translating on her phone and hel with everything. I had a CT scan on my head—had to take off my bra because of the metal, but not my jewelry, which was strange. Then a woman doctor took me to a private room. The CT scan machine was like something from the future with sliding doors, and it was in the basement—B1, radiology. Then I had a CT scan on my leg. The technician was nice, spoke a little English from school, helped me lie back, and I had to stay still—even though your leg twitches when someone tells you to stay still.

They said results would take about an hour, so I did the eye tests while waiting. Then she came down with all my scans. This is my brain scan—it’s big, as you can see, so I’m very intelligent, but there’s nothing wrong, which is good. My eyes are fine too, so the blurriness was obviously from anxety or a panic attack. I’m a bit embarrassed talking about it, but with anxety, it’s nice to get reassurance—and that’s the best part of today. I could lie and say I only went for my leg, but lots of people struggle with anxety, and talking about it helps, so I will. It was embarrassing going to the hospital, but I did need to check my leg too—that’s how I reassured myself.

We’re from the UK, and we grew up a bit brainwashed into thinking the NHS is the best in the world. But experiences like this make you wonder what we’ve been led to believe. In the UK, you don’t get sent home with meds like this—it’s totally different, an eye-opener. Don’t get me wrong, we’re lucky to have the NHS covering costs, unlike places like America, but the NHS is overwhelmed now, with not enough doctors, so people wait to be seen.

I’m glad I was here for my panic attack because the hospital environment was calming, not like a typical hospital. When we first got there and I was nervous, Ben said, “Don’t worry, we’re in a hospital—nothing can happen,” and he was right.

You won’t believe how much it all cost. Registration was 25 RMB. Each CT scan was 400 RMB, so 800 total. All the medicine—this big bag—brought the total to around 1,400 RMB (Ben corrected me, I said it wrong earlier). It shocked me, but compared to health, it’s not a lot. I’d expect hundreds for CT scans. I’ll Google how much they cost in the UK and USA and flash it up.

I’m now a registered patient there, which is cool. I even looked up apartments here—we’re thinking long-term. This is our seventh time in China, and we’ve fallen in love with it. Knowing the healthcare is top-notch, on top of great people, food, and everything else, is just another plus.

So glad you had positive experiences in a Chinese Hospital. Unlike Hospitals in the USA that operate as businesses and are there to make money; Hospitals in China are there to provide Healthcare services to it's people.

In the US they ask for your credit card or health insurance card first if you're conscious and if you're unconscious they will make the decision for you and then when you get the bill that you will never be able to pay back you will become unconscious again !

So good to hear that your hospital visit went well in China. I understand that Chinese people and their doctors take great pride in their medicine and medical care for their patients! Again so happy all is well now

Uk is such a mess no commitment and people getting angry with each other, drug crime homelessness and dirt every where

Dear Ben and Reanne, It’s a relief to know that you’re doing well and being well taken care of in Shenzhen. I know many people in Hong Kong have been traveling there for years to consult doctors, visit dentists, and seek entertainment. Although I haven’t been to China for decades, I believe you’ll grow to love the places there more and more. Like me, I fell in love with the beautiful scenery and the warmth of the people.

Best thing about Chinese health care..when you take a child to hospital, its like the law that a doctor must see the child in 10 minutes, 20 minutes for Adult.. here in Australia if you are awake and breathing and can talk..you can wait hours.

I had a good experience in a hospital in Naning, China last month while on holidays there. I was in and out of the hospital in 1 hour, even though it was pretty busy. Not only was the service efficient, the best part was the price, it was super affordable!

Chinese people like to call China a develo country, but this develo guy is much more advanced than developed Canada in many aspects.

garychin5321
On Balance China 'IS'; a Develo Nation as a Whole, Not all Cities R as developed as Shenzhen..... Maybe Shenzhen would be China's Chicago 'Hope'...

Hey guys, as you know, I spent 9 days in "critical respiratory care unit" in China with advanced pneumonia. Everyday CT Scans, blood test, MRI's. Was the best health care I have ever had. My total bill $1,100 usd.

I don't understand why you don't go to public hospitals. The best hospitals in China are all public hospitals, and the best doctors in China are all in public hospitals. The prices are several times lower than in private hospitals, and the equipment and facilities are much better than in private hospitals. They just may be more crowded.

jctai100
I've heard the bedside manor of public hospitals is lacking. Also crowded places only increases anxety on patients. Chinese public hospitals try to get you in and out as fast as possible which may sound good for little things but doesn't go smooth for larger issues.

GeorgeForman-i9t
Both is true. The top public hospitals does have the best doctors. But they also have the most people, and are generally older hospitals. They may have top end equipment, but the facilities are older. Cost really doesn't matter if you compare it to something like American hospitals. A CT at this hospital costing 400 rmb may cost 200. But that still peanuts compared to what it cost us. It's like 5-7000 if you don't have insurance.

You guys went to the private hospitals in China, and they were particularly expensive,we dont rarely go there, and their core is that their service is good. btw Public hospitals have better doctors, cheaper prices, and medical insurance that everyone in Chinese has. Many things are less than one-tenth of that in private hospitals

As expat, my wife gave birth to our daughter in a Chinese public hospital. The cost is very affordable and the service was great.

So sorry to hear about Reanne's surfing injury and the subsequent anxety and panic attacks, but glad that you were well taken care of at the Shenzhen hospital! Hope all that medicine will get you up and about in the shortest time. Looking forward to your next video and updates!

Who would have thought China Hospital is so good, private or public. Here in Australia, we have to wait hours to see a doctor.

You should go to public hospitals in China, specifically Third-Tier Class-A general hospitals or specialized hospitals. These are public institutions where medical fees are very affordable. The hospital featured in the video is a private facility, where prices are significantly higher than in public hospitals. Moreover, China’s public hospitals generally offer better care compared to private ones. Although they can be crowded, they employ a large number of doctors, many of whom are proficient in English. Patients can expect efficient treatment due to the doctors’ extensive experience and faster-paced services. Medical equipment in public hospitals is also superior to that in private facilities. Therefore, it is advisable for anyone in China to seek treatment at public Third-Tier Class-A general hospitals or specialized hospitals.

I'm glad Reanne got herself sorted in the hospital. I'm sorry to hear about her having anxety. It's not easy to have anxety and travelling to other countries. Wishing you a speeding recovery. No worries now Reanne, you are in China, it's a safe country and the people there will help guide you. I understand from some of the comments below that if you had gone to a public hospital, it will be crowded but I bet it isn't a 6-8 hours waiting time. I live in Ontario (a province in Canada) and recently, I took my husband and mom to the hospital. It took about 7 hours from the time they walked into the hospital to the time they stepped out of the hospital. Two years ago, my nephew was in Ottawa hospital and waited for over 12 hours (from 7pm - 7am), yes overnight for his injured foot. He finally got pissed and told the staff there that he was leaving because he's a student and he had classes to go to. He finally got looked at and he came out of the hospital with a cast. Poor thing, no family around to take care of him as he was studying in Ottawa University, far away from home (Toronto).

I ended up in the hospital last year in chong Qing. Draw blood same day, blood test results within 20min, and seeing the doctor takes only 40min total.

Shenzhen Bo'ai Shuguang Hospital is a private hospital, not a public one, so their primary goal is profit. If you're only treating a leg sprain with no bone or joint damage, it's fine. A vision test or a head CT scan isn't necessary; that's a bit exaggerated. China has excellent treatment options for orthopedic and muscle sprains; you can seek treatment at a specialized orthopedic hospital.

A significant medical tourism trend has emerged in China, primarily among Western tourists, particularly from the US and the UK, since 2024. However, I have to point out that the medical bill you just paid might not be much compared to what you have to pay for the same things in your own country, but to an average-income Chinese person, 1,400RMB is still pretty expensive. Although that's how much they have to pay without any insurance cover, plus the government health benefit. If they have those covers then the medical bill usually would be around half of what you just paid for.

Chinese medicine practitioner here. The herbal medicine normally helps improve body circulation to assist with pain management (not painkiller type) and bone healing.

If you are considering purchasing property in China, Shenzhen's prices are still relatively high. You could consider nearby cities, such as Zhuhai (around 15,000 yuan per square meter). If your budget is limited, Beihai (around 5,000 yuan per square meter) is also an option. Both Zhuhai and Beihai are near Shenzhen, coastal tourist cities with airports and high-speed railway

Glad everything is taken care of in a couple of hours. Cost is reasonable. Take a break from travel, rent an apartment, stay by the beach for a couple of days so your leg can recover. All the best.

In UK you won't be able to finish all the tests within a day, unless you're admitted to a hospital but for situations like this you have no chance to be admitted.

You can rent an apartment near Shenzhen Dameisha. There are many beach apartments there. They are all new apartments. You can directly see the beach and stroll along the beach
