NEW DELHI: For the first time in six years, PM Modi is unlikely to be a part of the G7 summit being hosted by Canada this year from June 15-17. There's no official invite yet from Canada for the meeting in Alberta but Modi in all likelihood would not have travelled there in any case, especially when India still isn't sure the new government in Ottawa will be more receptive to its concerns about Khalistani separatists.

A Canadian G7 spokesperson didn't confirm to TOI late on Sunday if Modi was going to be invited. Any eleventh-hour invitation is unlikely to be considered by India because of logistical constraints, likely efforts by the separatists to disrupt the visit and the strained bilateral ties that both Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney have committed to improve. A bilateral meeting on the margins could have given an opportunity for the heads to jointly reaffirm their commitment to rebuilding ties.

Canada hasn't officially announced the names of guest leaders for the summit, which will see the heads of government of major world economies in attendance, but reports in Canadian media said Ottawa had invited leaders of Australia, Ukraine, South Africa and Brazil.

This will be the first time that Modi won't be at the meeting since France invited him for the summit in 2019. His presence at the summit of what is also an informal grou of like-minded de ocracies has been seen as a sign of India's growing role in sha the global agenda and addressing transnational issues.

Sikh separatists last week called upon the Carney government not to invite the Indian PM, citing India's alleged reluctance to cooperate in investigations into the killing of separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Something I don’t understand is why would you protest in a country that you live in for the demands to be met in another country. Also, even after your demands are met and Khalistan is created, you will never choose to live in there anyway. Efforts totally in vain.

India brought Sikhs from Pakistan gave them land and massive rehabilitation package post independence which has not done for Bengalis in West Bengal. The Bengalis haven't made such demands. Moreover, I don't understand what Hindus have to do with their plight. 1984 was a political riot post Indira Gandhi's assassination, nothing to do Hindu/Sikh religion. The media has twisted it into religion tension.

As a Canadian, I am disappointed to see the spread of diaspora politics in the Greater Toronto Area. Most Gen Z Canadians don't really understand what's going on in India. But as the situation escalates, they will.

After China and Pakistan, I believe Canada is the greatest threat to our nation. We must recognise the enemy at the right time and deal accordingly. It's not like Canada is immune to separatism in their provinces or becoming a state of the US themselves. Use that to your advantage. They have states like Alberta and Quebec, Indian government should focus that way. Create situations like you did in Balochistan.
