Barack Obama mulls visit to Hiroshima

WASHINGTON: The Obama Presidential finale is getting better and better. For more than seven decades after the US levelled Hiroshima and Nagasaki with atom bombs to defeat Japan in World War II, the twin cities have been politically radioactive for American Presidents despite the post-war US alliance with Tokyo. Come May, Obama may become the first US President to visit — in repentance — sites that experienced the only instance Washington, or any country, has used nuclear weapons on another nation.

Rose Gottemoeller, the Obama administration's under secretary for arms control and international security, who became the first senior US government official to attend ceremonies commemorating the anniversary last year of the atomic bombings, has indicated that a Obama visit is under consideration. This week, Washington is ram it up by sending secretary of state John Kerry to pay a visit to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, on the sidelines of the ongoing Group of 7 foreign ministers meet.

The US is clearly testing the waters, but given Obama's recent foreign policy flourish, including detente with Iran and Cuba, a visit is almost certain when he goes to Japan for the G7 Summit in May.

So what do you expect then to teach in schools ? "Yeah, we dropped those bombs and killed million people because we are big bad people and love killing" ???? Obviously they have to state that this was necessary to stop the war which was killing millions. Children at that age have to be taught bravery, loyalty to nation, belief in the country, love for their own country, etc. Eventually they will know the truth anyway, but their tender minds will not have been corrupted early and made them ...

Hmmm Sir, this has nothing to do, if they should love their country or nor. But if your country is guilty, you should say, yes this was wrong. Otherwise this " madness " is going on and on.

The death toll was not millions but a lac. Hiroshima was chosen as a target with care to send a message an minimize casualties.

They were right. What's your doubt? After what Japan did to US and other countries, they fully deserved it. For you kind information, it was war time and they weren't playing the in the park.

and we should not forget, that Japan also was working on its own atom bomb.

But they were right in drop the A bomb on Hiroshima. Not only that the belligent Japanese Govt surrendered after SECOND BOMB WAS DROPPED on Nagasaki. Us could have easily dropped A Bomb on Tokyo but they refrained.

George Kafantaris

Maybe not now,but eventually we'll have to apologize for drop atomic bombs on civilians. Might as well get ready for it.

Big corporates' puppet's day are nearing! By the way, 'making history' by visiting Hiroshima does not excite American people; are they anti nationalists?

A very nice gesture n changed(positive) gesture of US towards Japan after the Second World War.
