Epidemic fear: 108 bodies flow down Ganga in 3 months
KANPUR/UNNAO: Scores of human bodies floating in downstream Ganga led to the police visiting the Pariyar Ghat area of Unnao on Tuesday. Locals claimed that more than 108 bodies had accumulated at the spot in the past few months and were being scavenged by stray dogs and birds.
Unnao SDM Saryu Prasad Shukla said, "Locals informed us about bodies decaying at Pariyar Ghat. A probe has been ordered into the matter. As of now, we are conducting the last rites of the bodies."
"There is no reason to fear as these bodies coming from Ganga upstream have been piling up here because of low water level. We are making all necessary arrangements to bury these bodies in pits being dug up by JCBs," said a senior administrative official.
Authorities swung into action soon after Ganga Pradushan Mukti Abhiyaan's national convener Ramji Tripathi sat on a 'dharna' on the banks of Ganga demanding immediate arrangements for disposal of these bodies before Wednesday's Makar-Sankranti festival.
'恒河受害拯救运动'全国召集人 R.曲帕西在恒河岸边举行了静坐抗议 ，要求在星期三的马克桑格拉提节之前立即安排处理这些尸体，在这之后，当局随即付诸行动。
"Bodies pose a dangerous situation, when such an important bathing festival of Hindu community is falling on Thursday," said Tripathi.
He added that Pollution Control Board and other regulatory bodies should take proper measures to control threat of water contamination as bodies were decaying at that spot for the past three months.
"Water has its own assimilation capacity and lots of useful bacteria that takes care of contamination. But once the water starts receding, threats of infection and epidemic may rise," added social organization Eco-Friends' president Rakesh Jaiswal.
Sources, meanwhile, said that district medical and health department had been alerted about the threat of infectious disease outbreak.
Bodies' recovery also belie irrigation department's claim of thousands of cusecs of water being discharged in Ganga from Narora dam. Tripathi alleged that these bodies would not have piled up in such a huge number had the water been discharged in river at regular interval.
