India's Union Cabinet has approved a ₹2,814 crore Capex Support Scheme to set up two lithium and two nickel processing plants over five years, as the country tries to reduce its near-total dependence on imported refined battery materials. So why does processing matter as much as mining, how tight is China's grip on this part of the supply chain, and can India really build a foothold of its own?

Even if India has access to the abundance of lithium and nickel India still needs China's knowledge and technical know-how to build EV batteries which China rejects with a smile. That must be frustrating for India.

True. But acknowledging a problem exsts is the first step towards addressing the problem. India lags not only in Lithium and Nickel processing capability but in many other sectors. However, India is turning the tide. Before 2014, India had negligible defence and electronics/phones export. In fact, for phones India imported about 85% of its phones for its people till recent times but now India not only meets its domestic requirements but is the 2nd largest global exporter of phones after China and our defence exports have been surging at record speed. So, hang on and let's talk about this in 5 years time.

Well, this is not a subsidy for the entire industry/market but for only setting up the factories. Once the factories are set up the factory owners will look after themselves. Besides, there are huge demands for these minerals so I'm pretty sure once the factories are established they will have huge orders/demands to fulfill which is currently procured from China

You can't buy an entire fine-dining restaurant fully stocked with master chefs and culinary engineers for the price of a cup of coffee.

Capital is only the tip of the iceberg. The real bottlenecks are proprietary technology, complex chemical engineering, specialized equipment, and operational know-how. You can't expect a kindergarten toddler to deadlift 200 pounds just because there's a demand for it.

你真的清楚，单独建一座锂或者镍冶炼厂要多少钱吗？

想用一杯咖啡的钱，买下一家配齐大厨和研发团队的高端餐厅，根本不可能。

这点资金只是杯水车薪。真正卡脖子的是专利技术、复杂化工工艺、专用设备和运营经验。不能只因为市场有需求，就指望幼儿园小孩硬拉起200磅的重量。

it is not depend it is catching up. hey keep going maybe u can perfect it we will need them for space and earth. also it will give that boost ur economy needs. when was the last time u created something on ur own for the earth. u have all these tec engineers who could in theory get new training in different tec cause they should be able to understand the math or take all the math guys training and working on new ideas or perfecting old ones. start testing across the country and get them all together to start the new system.
