But it has always carried one hidden flaw: the steel bars inside it rust over time, cracking the concrete from within and costing the world hundreds of billions of dollars in repairs every year. Now, researchers in China have developed a new material that may finally solve this problem. Built by teams at Tongji University, Harbin Institute of Technology, and the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology, this new concrete can stretch up to five hundred times more than regular concrete before it cracks, using a mesh of ultra-thin fibers that spread stress evenly instead of letting one crack take over. That flexbility means water and salt can no longer reach the steel inside, effectively removing the rust problem that has plagued reinforced concrete for over a century.
