However, football requires a grassroots foundation to cultivate a football culture. China has 1.4 billion people, but fewer than the UK in terms of football players. The US is slightly better than China in this regard, but is still far from being a football powerhouse. This objectively illustrates the point.

I can only speak for China, three reasons: 1. While it is more popular among the older generations, young people care more about e-sports than football. The demand is not really there, which contributes to reason 2. The salary is not that competitive, why would people waste their youth/their kids' youth training football for no future when they can just do STEM and get a good paying job. 3. The national team hasn't performed well for ages due to mismanagement and corruption, there isn't a "superstar" for people to get attached to and there likely won't be one due to reason 1 and 2. People used to care, they don't anymore.

i haven't watched the video, but just last evening we discussed this in chinese class. The chinese teacher mentioned that the boys team won a football tournament in Italy so I just asked her, how is it possible the adult teams win nothing. her answer was that it is pretty much common knowledge in china that there is a lot of corruption in this sport and only the people with connection make the teams, which means, not the best people. side note: me and other foreign friends living in china all know people who are very passionate about football and are very good and win university tournaments. it is a popular sport, so it makes no sense that they should never win.

Interesting question. I think it is to do with cultural history. Like the commonwealth countries have big cricket teams via association I suppose . Then there is the general population's physique. There are still many poor people in India and China.. Nothing to do with politics, just that, that's what huge populations strew. Through rigid discipline and programing and money China have these elite gymnasts, high board divers. Culturally, we in Britain have no interest in American football or basketball. Whereas Tennis and golf are mostly associated with money and private clubs. But in everyone's local neighbourhood they'll be a game going of some sort going on. It's where we learn and develop what seem like natural or inherent skills.

Truth is America keeps going to the world cup because the nation in the America's are generally pretty poor standard of football except Mexco. Europe has the highest standard thus its harder to qualify (note the absence of Italy) and Asia has strong representatives like South Korea, Japan and the ME countries are getting better.
Another big factor is India is more focused on cricket and Chinese are more individualistic (note its easier to win while relying on yourself vs team sport, example individual Olympic golds)

@partricklin9749 India is so-so in cricket? Well that's news to every cricket viewer lol.
But that is because it's the only sport most indians care about. Other sports are played but the players get peanuts in resources if at all. The franchises in the sole indian football league has to literally pay to play this year. It's that bad.
And that's happening with football which actually has substantial number of fans (although it's quite low relative to India's population), just imagine the state of other games. This in turn discourages people to think they can have a career in sports.

In India mostly 4 to 5 states (low population)play football so nothing to do with population. Majority more inclined towards cricket,wrestling, athletics,hockey.Federation just there ghosting fifa, no one care literally.

Chinese are good at indoor sports like diving badminton gymnastic etc. One can't play soccer or tennis with an umbrella. Indian are good at singing and dancing.
