The world's first commercial supercritical carbon dioxde power generator has begun operation in Southwest China's Guizhou Province. It is viewed as a milestone in changing the power generation mode relying on steam for more than a century. China calls the project "Chaotan-1."

sCO2 technology may be a game changer. All my career working with power plants one fact sticking out like a sore thumb and that is the 1/3 efficiency of turbines. Even today a gas or steam turbine typically has an efficiency of just 1/3. This is to say we burn 300% fuel just to get 100% electricity out! The rest is wasted in the form of heat dumped into the environment, mostly as heated seawater back to the sea. For this reason no power plant can exceed 7,000 MW to 8,000MW barrier because the scale of abstracting cold seawater and disperse the heated seawater, normally with about 6 degree above the ambient, is at its limit. When a large plume of warn seawater circulates it can re-enter back into the cooling system to degrade the power generation. Using sCO2 instead of steam if fully implemented will definitely a game changer as the system does not need a massive amount of water.

超临界二氧化碳技术绝对能改变游戏规则。我这辈子都在和发电厂打交道,有个问题一直特别扎眼,那就是涡轮机的效率只有三分之一。就算到了现在,燃气轮机也好、蒸汽轮机也罢,效率基本都还是三分之一。说白了,我们要烧掉三倍的燃料,才能发出来一倍的电!剩下的能量全以热能形式浪费了,大多是把加热后的海水排回大海。正因为这个,发电厂的装机容量才突破不了7000到8000兆瓦的瓶颈——抽取冷水、排放温水(一般比环境水温高6度左右)的规模已经到顶了。要是一大股温水回流,重新进入冷却系统,发电效率就会下降。如果全面用超临界二氧化碳取代蒸汽,那绝对是颠覆性的,因为这套系统根本不需要大量用水。

they video states they hope to increase the efficiency by 50%. Although that is remarkable progress, based on what you've stated, it seems there will still be room for improving the efficiency. 1/3 means the efficiency was about 33%, which means with this approach they expect around 48-49%.

他们希望把效率提升50%。这进步确实很显著,但按你说的来看,效率提升的空间应该还没到头。三分之一的效率差不多就是33%,这么算的话,用这个技术应该能把效率提到48%到49%左右。

it's insane that after all this time, we are still using boiling water into steam to create electricity. Even if we've achieved useful nuclear fusion reactors, they were supposed to generate electricity via boiled water into gas turbine. It was about time to make an advance in this field. Well done.

简直离谱,这么多年过去了,我们居然还在靠烧水煮蒸汽来发电。就算将来核聚变反应堆能投入实用,居然还是要靠煮水驱动燃气轮机发电。这个领域早就该有突破了,干得漂亮!

Remember that ancient Chinese discovered steam,and they used it to cook domain buns etc... moxbustion, was a Chinese TCM who also adopts the same method.

The plant in Texas started construction in 2021; the actual testing only started in 2024. It is just a pilot program to test new technologies. China's plant is generating power and adding it to the grid.

得州的那个电厂2021年才动工,2024年才开始实际测试,只是个测试新技术的试点项目。中国的这个可是已经在发电,而且并入电网了。

Hahaha... Are you nuts??? China was the first to use steam in cooking Chinese dimsum. When the western missionaries visit China's Qing dynasty,those missionaries copy China's way of cooking. All families in china have their own food steamer and the process of sCO2 was using steaming method.

哈哈哈,你疯了吧?!中国才是最早把蒸汽用在蒸点心上的国家。清朝的时候,西方传教士来中国,都是照搬我们的烹饪方法。中国家家户户都有蒸锅,而超临界二氧化碳技术用的就是类似蒸汽加热的原理。
