Europe needs defence capabilities of its own to not be an easy target so that a war does not break out to begin with. America is not a predictable defence partner anymore. Just that, when Kennedy threatened to war, the Soviet leader was peaceful (or weak) enough to reach a compromise. While when Putin threatened to war, NATO and Ukraine listened to it as a joke. Nonetheless, Russia's war against Ukraine is not justifiable, but understandable (and sadly, could have been avoidable).

Every member must agree before a new country is accepted - including Hungary, Turkey and Germany, with Germany itself opposing Ukraine's membership in 2008. The idea that Ukraine was on some inevitable path to NATO membership that justified invasion doesn't match the historical record. Even after 2014, Ukraine wasn't offered a Membership Action Plan, let alone actual membership. - Cuba and the USA were openly hostile to each other during the Cold War, and Cuba had an actual military alliance with the USSR. This notion that Ukraine was joining NATO... There was a rapprochement after the country was invaded in 2014 and an entire oblast (which had voted in favour of Ukraine's independence in 1991) was taken from them. Of course they bought weapons from NATO members after that - who else would they turn to?
