India-China air travel resumes after 5 years: IndiGo operates Kolkata-Guangzhou flight; first since 2020

KOLKATA: Monica Liu lives and breathes Beiing, the 'Tangra-style' Chinese restaurant that is the beating heart of weekends in Kolkata's Chinatown. But on Sunday night, Guangzhou was on her mind. For the first time in five years, she was on a direct flight from the city she calls home to the country of her ancestors.

Liu was among the first of 176 passengers to board IndiGo's resurrected Kolkata-Guangzhou flight that bridged the gap in direct air connectivity between India and China, triggered by Covid pandemic and extended by the diplomatic frost following border clashes in 2020.

For someone who once travelled frequently between the two countries to visit relatives, the wait felt longer than five years for Liu. "I am flying to meet some of my relatives back in China. I was a frequent flyer between Kolkata and China prior to Covid. Now that direct connectivity is back, I wish to resume regular travel," she said.

加尔各答：莫妮卡·刘的生活与“北京餐厅”紧密相连。这家“坦格拉风味”中餐馆，是加尔各答唐人街周末生活的核心。但周日晚上，她心中牵挂的却是广州——五年来，她首次搭乘直飞航班，从这座她称之为“家”的城市，飞往祖辈所在的国家。

刘女士是176名乘客中的一员，他们登上了靛蓝航空复航的加尔各答-广州航班。该航班重新搭建起中印直飞航线的桥梁，此前这条航线因新冠疫情中断，2020年边境冲突引发外交关系紧张后，中断状态进一步延长。

对于曾频繁往返两国探亲的刘女士而言，这五年的等待显得格外漫长。“我要飞去中国见一些亲戚。新冠疫情前，我经常往返加尔各答和中国。现在直飞航线恢复了，我希望能重新开始定期出行。”她表示。

The Airbus A320 Neo departed at 10pm, just over a fortnight ahead of IndiGo starting its Delhi-Guangzhou service on Nov 10. China Eastern Airlines is scheduled to resume its Shanghai-Delhi flight a day earlier.

More than 40 weekly flights once linked Indian metros with Shanghai, Guangzhou and Kunming.

All were suspended in 2020. Union govt's decision to reopen tourist visas for Chinese nationals paved the way for flights to resume, with Delhi and Beiing agreeing in principle to restore air services during foreign secretary Vikram Misri's trip in Jan.

It is unlikely that China will take any meaningful steps to support Indiaâ s aspirations, such as securing a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. While China is willing to export a wide range of goods to India, it imports very little in returnâ mostly raw materials. Moreover, China is unlikely to assist India in develo its manufacturing sector unless external forces, such as pressure from the United States or major corporations like Apple, compel it to do so. When anti-China mood morphed into ingoism and (manufactured / fake) nationalism in India, people held protest rallies burning made-in-China imported goods, including smartphones, beat up Chinese people in India, banned Chinese apps, and spread canards and conspiracy theories about China and Chinese people. India needs Chinese goods, tech, investments more than China needs India / Indians / Indian stuff. Very soon, China will achieve self-sufficiency and export capability in even generic medicines whereas India will backslide to 19th-century Third World hell hole. Who knows, the next govt might even replace the blue chakra or wheel in the tricolor with shite / t urd emoji?
