Gujarat plane crash: Air India confirms 241 dead in Ahmedabad–London flight crash; only one survivor

NEW DELHI: Air India has confirmed that flight AI171, en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick which crashed shortly after take-off on Wednesday afternoon, resulted in 241 fatalities out of the 242 people on board.

The 12-year-old Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner took off from Ahmedabad at 1:38 pm with 230 passengers and 12 crew members. “We regret to inform that, of the 242 aboard, there are 241 confirmed fatalities. The sole survivor is being treated in a hospital,” Air India said in an official statement. According to Air India , the survivor is a British national of Indian origin.

The passengers on board included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese citizens, and 1 Canadian national.

A team of Air India caregivers has been deployed in Ahmedabad to support families and assist local authorities.

This crash was of a unique nature. Apparently, the Aircraft had arrived by a previous incoming flight, had received the customary inspection and fuelled. If the Commander of the incoming flight had logged any defect or deficiency they would have come out in the media report. It is safe to assume that the Aircraft was Airworthy when it arrived at Ahmedabad. Yet, the Aircraft took off and three minutes later it had crashed. WSJ has reported "The airplane’s pitch in videos of the brief flight appears to be correct but it increases as the jet gets closer to the ground, which means that the wings aren’t creating enough lift. With the nose pointing higher, that would create more drag, requiring more thrust and more lift, If you’re already not producing enough lift, IT'S VERY BAD PLACE TO BE." One report stated that the Dreamliner has red lights that come on if the flaps were not down. Yet the Video exhibited by BBC NEWS SHOWED THAT THE FLAPS WERE NOT DOWN WHEN THE AIRCRAFT FELL OFF. The Commander had had 11,000 hrs of flying experience YET HE WAS IN THAT BAD PLACE. The Aircraft had not hit any obstruction like a departing flight of Indian Airlines did in the 1990s at Aurangabad Airport. The wheels of the lifting Aircraft hit the Fencing at the perimeter of the Airfield and crashed. As far as I know, it is not normal practice for Airports to take video photos of aircraft when they leave or arrive. Yet, we have a video here. I checked Videos of this Aircraft that were published in Indian and Foreign Newspaper. The SIZE OF THE PLANE IN THE VIDEOS IS LARGE ENOUGH TO MAKE OUT THAT THE PLANE WAS GAINING HEIGHT BUT LEVELLED OFF AND BEGAN TO DESCEND, AND AFTER A FEW SECONDS THE NOSE AND WHEELS WERE HIGHER THAN THE TAIL. THEN CAME THE FLASH OF FIRE AND CLOUD OF SMOKE. We see a departing Aircraft in flight to this much detail only in Feature films. HD Cameras are placed at various places to get image of this much clarity. KEEG THIS IN MIND, HOW AND WHY DID THIS VIDEO TAKE BIRTH ? WHO GAVE THE VIDEO TO MEDIA? Any answers from those who know Airport operation or have read more details of the accident?
