China is reportedly aiding Bangladesh in reviving an old World War II airbase at Lalmonirhat. This old British era base is just 12-15 kilometers from the Indian border. The airfield, currently controlled by the Bangladesh Air Force has been inactive for decades. More crucially it lies only 135 kilometers from the Siliguri Corridor, which is known as India’s crucial ‘Chicken’s Neck’ connecting the northeast to the rest of the country. Chinese officials recently visited the site, signaling Beiing’s growing interest. Although the purpose of reviving the air strip, whether it will be used for civilian purposes or military reasons —is still unclear. But what is clear is that such a Chinese presence so close to this narrow passage could increase India’s strategic vulnerability.

The distance between Hasimara airbase of West Bengal India and Bangladesh border is almost 17 km. The distance between Maharaja Bir Bikram Agartala airbase of Tripura and Bangladesh border is almost 2- 4 km. The distance between Lalmonirhat airbase and Siliguri corridor is around 140 - 160 km. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Maldives all these countries have very similar cultures, skin color, foods and language with India but they are having a better relationship with China instead of India?
