US plans to build a new missile defence system would raise the risk of an arms race and could “turn outer space into a battlefield”, Beiing has warned. Describing Washington as being “obsessed with pursuing absolute security”, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning on May 21, 2025, said the “Golden Dome” missile defence system proposed by US President Donald Trump would entail a “significant increase in outer space combat means”, including research and development and the deployment of orbital interception systems. Beiing’s comments came a day after Trump laid out fresh details of his plan for the US$175 billion Golden Dome programme, a system proposed to protect the US from foreign attacks, including from China and Russia.

Both superpowers saw the importance of how destabilizing it would be to the global order if one side had the technology and the other didn't. The same underlying factors still hold true today, but the US are not what they once were (to put it politely).

My issue with the Golden Dome Anti-Missile system and it is a view that is shared with people who are also military and geopolitical commentators is that it can make the US more belligerent. The whole doctrine of MAD prevented nuclear war from ever happening, but the US wants to create a defense system that essentially puts a bullet in the idea of mutually assured destruction. Without MAD, who is the only nation that gets to launch nukes without suffering the consequences? The United States. Is that a bad thing? Depends on your perspective. I am an American, but I also understand China's perspective and I will say that this is a threat to China's national security and I do not fault them for voicing their concerns about the procurement of such systems.
