Is China really safe at night? Or is the reality completely different from what Western media would have you believe?

Tonight, I'm exploring the streets of Shanghai, China, to discover what life is really like after dark in one of the world's largest and most futuristic cities.

While many American cities struggle with homelessness, street crime and public safety concerns, here in China, families are enjoying their evenings, people are walking freely through the streets, and the city is buzzing with life long after sunset.

But there's something else that makes China at night rather extraordinary…

中国晚上真的安全吗？还是现实与西方媒体想让你相信的完全不同？

我探索了中国上海的街头，体验了这座世界上最大、最具未来感的城市之一在夜幕降临后的真实生活，这里非常安全。

当许多美国城市还存在大量无家可归的流浪汉、还在与街头犯罪和公共安全问题作斗争时，在中国这里，家庭正在享受祥和的夜晚时光，人们自由地走在街上，深夜城市依然充满生机。

Security is probably pretty good in wealthy neighborhoods in the US, because it's difficult for poor people to even get in. There are all kinds of rules and restrictions designed to keep them from hanging around. For example, there may be no benches or lounge chairs in public spaces, no temporary parking spaces, and even private security forces that patrol 24/7, constantly harassing anyone they consider poor or out of place. It's basically a police force dedicated to protecting the wealthy.

美国富人区看着治安不错，本质是穷人很难进去。各种规定限制，就是不让穷人在附近逗留。比如公共区域不放长椅、休闲座椅，不设临时停车位，还有24小时巡逻的私人安保。只要他们觉得对方看着穷困、不对劲，就会上前盘问。说白了，这些人就是专门保护富人的。

Shanghai isn't the standard in China, mate. We got cities that are way better than Shanghai.
Although, I say this simply because I am from Beiing. We can't like Shanghai. But then again, last time I visited Shanghai I felt I was in love with it.

@fredrikrugby No one said anything about Shanghai being the standard. However, Shanghai is MUCH nicer than Beiing and it isn't close.

I have only visited Shenzen in China. I never felt unsafe walking around Shenzen at any time of the day or night. Absolutely, wonderful experience with the most friendly people I have met for many years. Will definitely visit more of China in the future

Just came back from China. Went to Shenzhen, Guangzhou & Foshan. Always felt safe, no drunks, homeless people or even heard a police or ambulance siren all through my stay there! Amazing country, friendly people and abundance of delicious food. Can't wait to return

Same. Arrived back yesterday after 18 days intense touring and had same experience across all areas remote and bustling. Totally safe on the streets public transport, or walking. Everywhere is spotless, well maintained, well services with staff and efficient.

Just back from China last week! Honestly had a great time—it felt super safe, and people were unbelievably friendly, polite, and so helpful whenever I needed directions.
Food-wise, I stuck to the less oily dishes which were really good, and I definitely ate my weight in fruits and desserts. The air was surprisingly crisp and fresh too, though being up in the highlands definitely helped with that. Plus, practically everything was ridiculously cheap!

我上周刚从中国回来！说实话玩得很开心，安全感十足。当地人非常友善有礼貌，问路的时候都很热心帮忙。

吃饭我选清淡少油的菜，味道很不错，水果和甜品吃到尽兴。空气也比我预想的清爽，当然环境起了很大作用。而且大部分东西价格都很实惠！

Like your wording and accent Jason from Australia here, Shanghai is so big and amazing, you can find anything suits you, from food to accommodation, from bars to night clubs, from Parks to natural reserves, even 2 month would be too short for Shanghai, and if combined the nearby city like Hangzhou, Suzhou, Wux, Ningbo, Jiaxng, Huzhou, Nantong, Changzhou, Naning, even two years is too short.

Been to China a few times now. Plenty of those times I've seen small groups of men hanging around in 7-Eleven drinking alcohol as if it was a bar (Those which have seating areas at least). Beer is very affordable, so they have an almost endless supply of beer, and they are also surrounded by a multitude of snacks (hot and cold). They just grab what they want from the fridge or shelf buzz it through the till sit back down and continue chatting with their friends. Pretty ingenious if you think about it.

我去过中国好几次。经常看到一小群人在7‑11里喝酒，就跟在酒吧一样，至少带座位的门店是这样。啤酒价格不贵，可以一直喝，还有各式各样冷热小吃。他们从冰柜、货架拿好东西，结账之后，坐下继续和朋友聊天。想想还挺有意思的。

Many people said the Northeast Region in China is declining especially Dalian in Liaoning Province is declining, but it's actually a good peninsula city in China, and Dalian has the largest city square - inghai Square in the world, and it's a city with incredibly beautiful landscapes, Dalian is building the world's largest artificial island airport which is inzhouwan International Airport and it plans to open at 2030. And most native people of Dalian are very civilized in their behavior, Dalian is the best city in the Northeast Region of China.

I've had the pleasure of visiting China twice and was surprised at how safe I felt everywhere we went from Beiing to Quingdao.
Their subways in Beiing were clean and cheap to use and the high speed trains are amazing.
The people were all very friendly and we had a great time!
However, there is a LOT of trash in many places there. Even in the streets and country.
In the US, it's a MUCH different story and the public transit system, if there is any, is an absolute joke. And you need to be prepared and always alert in case you are robbed, or threatened in any way.
I definitely felt safer in China than big cities here.

我有幸去过两次中国。从北京到青岛，一路都很有安全感，这点让我很意外。北京地铁干净、票价便宜，高铁体验特别好。

当地人都很友善，我们玩得很开心！不过很多地方垃圾不少，街上、乡下都能见到。

美国就完全不一样了，就算有公共交通，体验也很差。出门必须时刻提防，防止遭遇抢劫、恐吓。

相比美国的大城市，我在中国安心得多。

If there are still people thinking China is unsafe, they should leave their house and travel the World, especially to China, to Singapore, to Japan, and you will see how safe countries can be, when they are governed well.

We went to China for 2 weeks last month and it was beautiful, the cities how clean how safe, but mostly the people so nice and would go out of their way to help us.
We where mainly in Chongqing but also went for few days to ing. People took pictures with us and my son ended up playing with a older man in a park and enjoyed it.
The attention children get is nice and its in a nice loving way. I miss everything about it, now back to UK feels so lifeless, tasteless.

上个月我们在中国待了两周，体验很好。城市干净、治安好，最打动我的是当地人，他们很友善，会主动热心帮忙。

我们主要在重庆，也去兴平待了几天。当地人愿意和我们合影，我儿子还在公园里和一位老人一起玩耍，玩得很开心。

大家对孩子的关爱很温柔。我很想念那里的一切，回到英国之后，感觉一切都死气沉沉，没什么意思。
