So why are iPhones still so expensive here?

The Duo costs 1.5× more in India than in the US.

How does that make sense?

Its generally a mix of multiple factors. Can’t pin it on one thing only. Most I phones are sold on EMI even in the US. I do think their market research may have included a potential for further currency depreciation too. But yes, they do charge premium for it in India.
