Ok I have been in this Starbucks in Beiing for well over an hour and this laptop and bag have been the entire time & nobody has touched it.

Chinese ppl have taken public trust & safety to an absurd & likely unhealthy level.

No wonder they find everywhere else to be unsafe. They are not used to even watching their own stuff except staring at their phones non stop.

I go to China often and can confirm this is super‑common at least in the place I go to. I can't do it myself though: I take everything with me when I go pee. Truly appreciate how safe it is even though my mind will not let me relax.

Your loss. I just leave stuff there now

Singapore feels safer. And Chinese countryside feels less safe. Friend got her dog stolen.
But Shanghai is much, much safer than NYC or SF.

Singapore is the golden standard

Nothing unhealthy about it. Chinese people becoming decent in a single generation...amazing progress. Yeah it's still shitty everywhere else, but that's not China's fault.

Will be awkward if the owner forgot where he left it and is looking. They should at least plug it in

Sometimes Western media says CCTV is awful because there’s no privacy. Other times, they praise it for making people and their property unbelievably safe. Funny how that works.

That's standard with most of Asia

It’s true, but it super annoying when people only staring at their phone, they often got “stupid” when doing so

Improving the quality of personnel is one thing, but on the other hand, CCTV is everywhere. If I stole a computer or a phone from your table, I'd be caught within two hours and end up in prison—it's just not worth it.

I once left an umbrella on a bench inside a mall in Wuhan. When I wet back, it was ... gone !

Ungovernable
Umbrellas are public domain

larrysalibra
Public spaces where others won't steal your stuff should be a basic requirement for a civilization.
If a society can't even deliver that, what exactly is it doing?

Stealing even 1 yuan can get you in jail for a year. With cameras everywhere, people stop stealing. In the past, there were pickpockets everywhere in China.

Phone addiction has reached insane levels in China

Nothing is unhealthy about this level of trust

Give it a rest, high trust society because of CCTV. I was scammed many times during my 3 weeks stay in Guangdong...

XU J
May I ask how you were deceived? Chinese do not know English. They can't even talk to you.

That's one of the biggest risk for Chinese going overseas. They sub consciously assume it's as safe as China. I had to warn my cousins when she was here recently.

Isn’t the real question why the west is so lawless

XuKai_Soso0305
This is very common in Asia. People leave their stuff unattended all the time and nothing happens. Unlike here in the US…that shit would be gone in seconds

Andrew Pantyukhin
Been like this for about a decade in Tier‑1 cities (longer in Beiing).
High trust in basics is extremely healthy and great value.
It flips to low trust for most business deals with strangers, so it’s not like the Chinese are gullible compared to westerners.

Jerez
So you saying it is not good for a country that people feel safe and it is unhealthy to make a public trust and safety to the level where you can just your staff without thinking got stolen. I see

In China, public places like Starbucks and airports have extremely high camera coverage, so if you dare to steal anything, the police will catch you the next second.

nSoloTheForce
Not these thing to watch out for Coz all payments still link up. It's the same with Taiwan 30 years ago just that the high trust is with no CCTV. China need to watch out for scams of people drop in front of you for compensation, kidnaps of children and women countryside

Everything changed since they put cameras everywhere. Plus once identified, the thief will go to administrative detention for a least few weeks for sure. The certainty of punishment is what really works. Not really the cameras. Otherwise London will be as safe as China.

True! Ive also seen it and also once lft my phone to charge at a small shop while I was walking the kid in a park nearby

You can try taking someone else's laptop, and then you'll know why no one steals in the city.

I once forgot a bag of new things i bought on a bicycle basket, on the olympic avenue in BJ that was super crowded. 1 hour later my wife asked me wheres your bag? I told her where i left it and she (Chinese) thought someone must took it already. But It was still there!

sosoused
Well a big reason is security cameras are everywhere and I don't think it's a bad thing. If anyone dare to steal anything the cops can trace him down within minutes.

LOL the biggest joke in America is how some supermarkets require a lock on items on the shelf.

Geza Gardner
one of the hallmarks of an ideal society in Chinese classics is that there is no stealing in the streets. now we have someone who believes it's absurd & unhealthy to have this?

GlobalCitizen
Hehe, unhealthy? Everyone with a gun and has drug in pocket will be a healthy environment?

SongfZfy
In China, street theft has largely vanished. With few people carrying cash, the difficulty of selling stolen goods, and ubiquitous surveillance cameras, the risks and costs of such crimes have become prohibitively high.

David Brookes
So now China is bad because it's too safe?

Corgi
Just on top of my head, maybe you're used to live in a society with low trust level that you can't fathom the idea of people not stealing your shits?

Malcom SpaceX
pretty sure it has more to do with the consequences of stealing in China

IlCarabinieri
That's called a normal society lol. The wealthier parts of Los Angeles are like this btw, seen it with my own eyes. You are just Amerilard so used to psychopaths and dysfunction.

dihienv
I am not saying China is not safe, it's only that Chinese people are not as integral as you think. There are CCTV everywhere. That's the main reason theft is not happening.

Philoinvestor
Wait, people still go to Starbucks?

I once left my car unattended in NYC, and a nice black man sitting on the sidewalk came over and offered to take it to a parking spot for me for free. He didn't want money or anything. I saw him drive it across a bridge to what must be a safer parking lot. What a great city.
