In 1950, China was barely a year old. It had no meaningful navy, a limited air force, and almost no international recognition as a major power.
Then the Korean War changed everything. Under the command of Peng Dehuai, Chinese forces crossed the Yalu River, halted a United Nations advance, and forced the world to rethink what the new Chinese state was capable of.
1950年，新中国成立尚不足一年。那时，中国没有像样的海军，空军力量薄弱，国际上几乎不被视为大国。

It was serious at the begng then immediately jumped to the lazy Western propaganda of ballooning Chinese casualties... And it was a volunteer army. My paternal grandparents both fought in the war. They were just graduating school, a teacher and a doctor, both desperately needed Chinese professions, and both volunteered to go to war in North Korea, because in China this was seen as yet another Japanese invasion from Korea, which had already killed 35 million Chinese in WWII. They volunteered to fight for Chinese freedom.

Bear in mind that China had no economy and is a wartorn sheethole after decades of civil war and Japanese invasion. It possessed the absolute no cap worst army in the world, two thirds don't even have small arms and the last third only had bolt action rifles and a few grenades. You'd think the Americans would easily wrap this seemingly unruly , but no. Instead they routed the 8th US Army and made it beat a hasty retreat, in essence allowing that cringe ssa country North Korea to survive to this day and threaten the world with nukes. Chinese victory in North Korea is also what scared the sheet out of the US from invading North Vietnam, allowing it to keep buttressing the Viet Cong and gain eventual victory in the end.
