A new diplomatic standoff is emerging between Australia and China over control of the strategic Port of Darwin. Beiing has warned of potential retaliation if Prime Minister Anthony Albanese forces Chinese company Landbridge to give up its 99-year lease on the port. This is just going to be a lose-lose situation for Australia and the funniest part is some Australians are in support of this move and believe there is a national security risk.
The only reason the port is now profitable is that China is using the port to ship commodities bought from Australia and sending to China. China bought and upgraded it to make it modern and more efficient to ship goods bought. If Australia takes the port back which the government can do as long as they pay full compensation, China may stop using the port and the port will again be unprofitable. China is also likely to divest further from Australia which relies heavily on commodity exports to China.
Then you have reputational damage. Countries will think twice about investing in Australia.
Talk about shooting yourself in the foot while cheering.
The only security risk Australia face with China is Australia’s support to try to hurt China. Like punching China in the face and then screaming that China is a threat. Typical Western colonial move.
