China’s Type 075 amphibious assault ships have emerged as one of the most visible symbols of Beiing’s growing military pressure on Taiwan, combining scale, speed and flexbility in ways that significantly reshape the regional balance. December marked a turning point for the class, as the PLA deployed a Type 075 for the first time in large-scale drills encircling the self-ruled island, underscoring its central role in any future cross-strait operation, as per SCMP.

The Type 075, known as the Yushen class, is among the world’s largest amphibious assault ships, displacing between 35,000 and 40,000 tonnes. Designed to deliver troops, armour and aircraft directly onto hostile shores, it forms the backbone of the PLA Navy’s expeditionary and island-seizure capabilities. Often described by Chinese media as a helicopter carrier or light aircraft carrier, the ship combines a full-length flight deck with a large well deck for landing craft.

Construction of the first ship, the Hainan, began in 2018 and progressed at striking speed. Launched in 2019 and commissioned in 2021, it has since been joined by the Guangx, Anhui and a fourth sister ship launched in late 2023. Together, they represent a major leap beyond China’s earlier Type 071 amphibious transport docks and signal Beiing’s intent to sustain large-scale amphibious operations far from the mainland.

At around 780 feet long, the Type 075 can operate roughly 30 helicopters, including heavy transport models capable of lifting troops and equipment inland. Its flight deck supports simultaneous helicopter operations, while elevators connect to a large hangar below. The well deck can carry air-cushion landing craft and conventional landing vessels, allowing tanks, artillery and armoured vehicles to be ferried ashore.

Estimates suggest each ship can deploy between 800 and 1,200 marines, with some assessments placing the figure even higher. The vessel also includes extensive medical facilities and command spaces, enabling it to function as a floating headquarters during complex joint operations. Defensive systems, including short-range missiles and close-in weapons, provide protection against aircraft, missiles and small surface threats.

Crucially, the Type 075 supports multiple landing methods: vertical insertion by helicopter, over-the-horizon landings using hovercraft, and direct beach assaults by amphibious vehicles. These options can be coordinated simultaneously, complicating any defender’s response.

Let me get this straight: America invented the big deck assault ship and have been building them since the 1960's. Despite all this expertise and history, it still takes each ship of the current America-class around eight years to be built. Now China, with zero history of building any large surface ship (let alone LHA's), has designed and built THREE of these things in just six years . That's a new ship every other year. Put another way, the U.S.S. America was built in 2008 and there are currently only two in service. That's 16 years to build just two. Yes, the third (Bougainville) is ready to join the fleet, but that's still two ships every eight years. I've read these ships are incredibly difficult to built and that makes sense. Which leads to the understanding that the Chinese ships are POS. At least I hope. Because if they're as good as the American navy's then God help us.

It obtained Whitehead torpedoes, Italian Aspide AAMs (US AIM-7 Sparrow), French 100mm naval gun, French Crotale SAM, French/Italian naval combat mgmt systems, French Dolphin helicopter, civilian Blackhawk SAR helicopter, British 105mm tank gun, British RR Spey jet engine for JH-7 fighter bomber, French Super Frelon helicopter, GE LM2500 marine engines.

We can hope that the Chinese did not catch up to the latest western naval miltech as their military spending as a percentage of GDP was small.

I started watching Chinese military in 1999 when China hold the 50th anniversary of PRC military parade. The navy at that time is pretty much legacy of world war 2, while the air force looked like something left over from 70s. The army is bit okay, but nothing special. Since then, China has embarked the fastest military modernization in probably human history, even faster than the Chinese magnificent economic development that the world envied. It is mind boggling. Even more amazing how many tech bottlenecks across the fields, including jet engine, they managed to solved during this quarter of century. I'm not even sure if other countries can even emulate 10 percent of what China did. India, another China sized country, has been trying to make 3.5 gen jet for the past 20 years, with limited success, and I'm being generous.

At the far end , China need one more role , to provide naval supports for all friendly nations engaged in trading with China, preventing cohesions to dump China's international interests.

China's progress is remarkable, just expanding its military like it is currently doing is impressive but add in infrastructure, energy production, space exploration, EV's, high speed rail and lots more puts them well ahead of most countries.
