Yeah, because that's what it is to me. It’s a reflection of what happens when you hear news coming out of India talking about how great India is, how super its status is, and how it’s going to become this massive superpower. Then you see the behavior of its citizens—again, I’m not generalizing here and I’m not judging. It’s just that when you see this kind of disturbing behavior, you ask yourself how a nation can consider itself worthy of that superpower status. I remember when I went to China, I saw how the cities were run and how the Chinese people behaved. They acted normally, with a great deal of respect for the law, culture and tradition. And for me as a foreign visitor, I had to adhere to those laws and traditions, and respect those values. If I had a question, I asked the police politely and they helped me out, whether I was lost or had some other problem. So my point is, when you see this kind of behavior in India, you start to wonder how you can expect a country like that to be claiming such a prominent status in the world right now.

Yeah. David, I’ve traveled a lot in my life, and I don’t think you really need to learn all the local laws everywhere you go. To me, the law is very simple: don’t assault anyone, don’t enter other people’s private spaces without their consent, don’t scam or cheat people. Follow those rules and you’ll be perfectly fine almost anywhere. I mean, I feel extraordinarily free in China. You just have to be mindful that you shouldn’t do drugs or try to buy drugs there—even if you can get away with that in the United States or Canada. You can actually buy a can of beer and walk around with it in China with no problem at all. You can buy alcohol everywhere and drink it wherever you want, just don’t create a public nuisance, and everything is fine. I don’t even know what China’s social credit system is about, because I’ve never experienced it, and I’ve spent months at a time in China. So to me, the law there is just about basic human civil behavior, and that mindset has served me really well.

是啊，在我看来就是这么回事。印度媒体成天宣扬本国多么强大、地位多么超然，还说印度终将成为世界级超级大国，可看看印度民众的所作所为，就能看出问题所在。我再说一遍，我不是以偏概全，也不是刻意评判，只是看到这些令人反感的行为，难免会心生疑问：这样的国家，凭什么觉得自己配得上超级大国的名号？

我记得去中国的时候，亲眼看到中国的城市治理井然有序，中国民众的言行举止十分得体。他们守规矩、懂分寸，对法律、文化和传统都怀有深深的敬意。作为一名外国游客，我也必须遵守当地的法律法规和传统习俗，尊重这些价值理念。要是遇到问题，我礼貌地向警察求助，他们都会热心帮忙，不管是我迷路了，还是碰到其他麻烦，无一例外。所以我的看法是，看到印度这样的现状，实在很难想象，这个国家凭什么敢在当下宣称自己能在世界上占据重要地位。

没错，大卫。我这辈子去过很多地方旅行，我觉得其实根本不用费劲去熟记各地的本土法律。在我看来，做人的底线就几条：不伤人，不未经允许闯入他人私域，不坑蒙拐骗。守好这些规矩，走到哪儿基本都不会出问题。我想说，我在中国的时候，感觉无比自由。你只需要记住一点，千万别碰毒品、也别想着买毒品就行——哪怕你在美国、加拿大能侥幸做到这些，在中国也绝对不行。在中国，你买罐啤酒边走边喝，完全没问题；酒水随处可买，想在哪喝就在哪喝，只要不扰乱公共秩序，一切都顺顺利利。我甚至都不知道中国的社会信用体系到底是怎么回事，因为我从来没接触过，我可是在中国一次就待上好几个月。所以在我眼里，中国的规则，不过就是最基本的公民行为准则，抱着这样的心态处事，我过得特别舒心。

Here’s the problem with India: a businessman in India doesn’t think about providing value to you. He only thinks about transferring money from your wallet to his. If any economic value is created in the process, it’s just incidental. Even if he is creating some value for you, his underlying mindset is that of a scammer. Similarly, when you walk into a government office in India, my usual thought when talking to officials is, “What’s your expectation?”—which means, how much bribe do you want from me? Because that’s the only thing that seems to work for them. They’re not interested in doing their actual job. They’ll ruin you, even destroy you, as long as they can make a penny out of the situation. Unfortunately, the entire Indian society—I refuse to call it a civilization—is built on exploiting other people. It’s an oppressor-oppressed relationship all across the country. And that mindset doesn’t leave you even when you leave India; in fact, my understanding is that it gets worse with time. People become intellectually inbred because they live and spend most of their time with people from their own community in very small groups. Then the freedoms of the West give them the leeway to get away with a lot of bad behavior. So unfortunately, their mindset and their situation only get worse over time. These days, because they live in ethnic ghettos, there’s no pressure to assimilate into the local culture, and they just get worse and worse with every passing generation. But I must say, the first one or two waves of Indians who came to the United Kingdom were seen as model immigrants. They assimilated well and were reasonably respected in society. But unfortunately, now you’re starting to see the average Indians coming to the West, and that’s where the problems start.

印度的问题核心就在这：印度的商人从不会想着为你创造价值，心里只盘算着把你钱包里的钱揣进自己兜里。就算交易过程中产生了些许经济价值，也不过是无心之果。哪怕他确实为你带来了一点价值，骨子里还是抱着骗子的心态。

同理，在印度走进政府办事机构，我跟官员打交道时心里总会先冒一个念头：“你想要什么好处？”——说白了，就是想讹我多少贿赂。因为在他们眼里，这才是办事的唯一门道。他们对本职工作毫无兴趣，只要能从你身上捞到一分钱好处，哪怕把你坑惨、逼到绝路也在所不惜。

可悲的是，整个印度社会——我甚至不愿称其为文明社会——都是建立在压榨他人的基础上的。压迫与被压迫的关系，在这个国家无处不在。即便离开印度，这种心态也根深蒂固，甚至在我看来，还会随着时间变得愈发严重。人们大多只和同社群的人抱团相处，圈子狭小，思想也变得封闭僵化。而西方社会的自由环境，又让他们有了肆意妄为、行恶而不受惩处的空间。

所以他们的这种心态、这种处境，只会越来越糟。如今他们聚居在民族聚居区，毫无融入当地文化的动力，这种糟糕的状态，还会一代比一代更甚。但我必须说，最初一两批移居英国的印度人，曾被视作模范移民。他们很好地融入了当地社会，在民众中也拥有一定的尊重。可如今，更多普通印度人来到西方，问题也就随之而来了。

India doesn't have many shared values with others. Whether it's religion, language or history and culture, all these things are unique to India. While China might be in a similar situation, there is a huge difference between the two in that India centers all its exstence around those things (that no one outside of India cares about), while in China they don't, they only care about the economy and they do show respect to other people.

Very simple reason no revolution. Russia had a real revolution so they became a superpower. China had a real revolution so they gained real sovereignty then became a superpower. India is still ruled by a decrepit ancient elite.
