Europe is a big user of digital technology, but it relies heavily on the US and China for its digital infrastructure. That's a critical issue on the minds of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron as they co-host a summit on Europe's digital sovereignty here in Berlin today. Their goal is to make the continent 'digitally independent', to lower the risk of cyber attacks, and to boost the homegrown tech instustry.

I am in telco. Europe was once leading in the digital world. The name like Ericsson, Nokia, Siemens, SAP, Logica and some others used to rule the world. Even the GSM standard came from Europe. But, first, their innovation was slower compared to China. Secondly, their pricing was exorbitant compared to Chinese. Lesser sales means lesser fund for RnD. So, the vicious circle. One example, I still remember, when the consultants from Ericsson came to us, they stayed in five star hotels. When the engineers from Huawei came to us, they dressed like - sorry - peasants and stayed in cheap apt. At that time, people mocked the Chinese. But their efficiency takes them where they are now.

AI has exsted for decades; what we are witnessing today is the tech industry’s ability to scale automation with intelligence, and in that space, the United States is leading the world. For Europe to compete, it needs its own regional data centers to maintain full control over its digital infrastructure. This is absolutely possible, why not?!, but operating such data centers requires massive and continuous energy supply, something the EU currently struggles to produce at scale. Because of this energy limitation, I don’t expect Europe to resolve its digital sovereignty challenges or achieve full independence in its technological infrastructure in the near future.

I think it’s already too late for Europe to build their own cloud infrastructure and tech companies. The whole world is now interconnected through that system, and if the world disconnects from it, it can't be replaced. They should have done it back in the 2000s like Chína did, when the Internet was just starting to develop.
