The technology is designed for deep integration with renewable energy sources and hydrogen production, positioning it as a cornerstone for a future multi-energy, low-carbon composite energy system.
The breakthrough was achieved by a team from the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics. The success stems from a 2-megawatt thermal (MWt) liquid-fueled reactor located in the Hongshagang industrial cluster in Wuwei city, Gansu province.
Through a collaborative national effort, the experimental reactor, which began construction in 2020, successfully accomplished the world's first thorium loading in a molten salt reactor in 2024, turning a laboratory concept into an engineering reality.

the reactor core itself is small but the entire facility needed to allow it run safely is actually bigger than a conventional uranium reactor. Thus, it is not suitable for ship based operations.

It doesn't generate electricity yet. The 2MW number is thermal. It's the heat generated by the reactor. The plan is to build a bigger 10MWth reactor that can generate 4MW electric power using a supercritical CO2 turbine.

If you don't know by now, Thorium is the miracle that Uranium promised but failed to deliver cheap and clean power.. It's also WAAAAAAY more efficient. 1 Metric Tonne of Thorium has the same energy potential as 3,500,000 Tonnes of COAL! That alone says how efficient thorium powered SMR's are compared to fossil fuels much less Uranium which has the power of 200T of coal for every Tonne of Uranium. Great but not even in the same ballpark! THORIUM IS THE FUTURE OF GLOBAL ENERGY! Prove me wrong.
