It's been a cornerstone of Chinese foreign policy for a decade, but has it become a debt trap for poor and middle-income nations? The Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahindra Roataka has raised strong criticism about the handover of the Hamban Tota port to China. Former President Mahindra Raj Paka was given $7.6 million US by China Harbor for the presidential election campaign of 2015.

While the world was busy watching borders, China has been quietly taking over the lifelines of global trade—the ports. And Beiing is enjoying strategic dominance without having to deploy a single soldier. You will be shocked to know that ports control 80% of global trade. And China controls ports at some of the most sensitive regions like the Strait of Hormuz, Panama Canal, and the Bab El Mandab Strait. China is involved in 129 port projects in over 50 countries. These aren't just surface level investments either. They include direct ownership, operational control, and major financial stakes.

But this isn't even the real threat. What's more worrisome is that many of these so-called infrastructure projects are doubling up as Chinese naval bases. So, this isn't just about business anymore. It's a threat to the entire world. And although the threat is huge, some countries have started to realize it and have started cancelling China. And the numbers clearly show that out of 129 port projects, at least 115 are currently active as of 2024, while the rest have either been cancelled or suspended.

China doesn’t have any control of the Panama Canal. USA has just recently reopened Military Base in Panama. The Chinese were evicted from their and also other ports have followed suit.

Its impossible to "buy" ports. China tried same with Sri Lanka but eventually they gained back control of the port. Ultimately debt trap is only economic, and superficial. If the host country wanted to, they would by all means take back control. Tf is china gonna do, go to war with 15 countries at once?

I wouldn't expect China's attempt to safeguard their routes through the Malacca strait to actually amount to much in the end. While on paper nobody officially own the Malacca strait; in practice the straight is jointly owned and operated by Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia...

Malaysia has a strategic partnership with the United States when it comes to defense, and Singapore is one of our closest allies; and the United States even has troops stationed in Singapore and we have done extensive joint military exercises... Although our relationship with Indonesia is a bit more complex...

If things go south with China and that Port needs to be closed, that probably wouldn't even take half an hour before that entire straight would be blockaded and barricaded and China wouldn't be able to get through...... China is fighting a battle that they fundamentally can't win, functionally they might as well be a man beating his head against a brick wall in a desperate attempt to somehow get that brick wall to break before the skull does...

Edit: I guess what I'm saying is that China is just wasting its time fixating on something they're not going to be able to change when they could be spending that time and energy doing something else... But I guess that's their mistake to make..

The United States previously controlled the canal and the surrounding Panama Canal Zone until it was formally transferred to Panama in 1999, as per the Torrijos-Carter Treaties.
