NEW DELHI: Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar has said that Sunday’s tragic bridge collapse in Pune’s Maval tehsil to structural failure caused by rust and excessive crowding. Speaking to reporters after the incident, Pawar said, “We have received various versions of the incident. As per the preliminary information, the bridge was old and rusted. Many people were standing on the bridge when it collapsed.”

The incident occurred around 3.30 PM in the Kundamala area, a popular picnic spot on the Indrayani River, which had been swollen due to days of heavy rainfall. While it wasn’t raining at the time, at least 100 picnickers were reportedly present on the old iron bridge when it gave way.

事故发生在下午 3 点 30 分左右的昆达马拉地区，这里是因德拉亚尼河（Indrayani River）畔的热门野餐地点，由于连日暴雨，河水已明显上涨。尽管事发时并未下雨，但据报道，这座旧铁桥坍塌时，至少有 100 名野餐者正在桥上。

Four people have been killed and at least 18 people were seriously injured in the collapse. Search teams are still looking for at least three individuals, including a child, believed to be trapped under the collapsed structure.

The collapsed bridge, described as a pedestrian-only structure, had a warning board barring the entry of two-wheelers. Maharashtra Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan, who reached the spot to oversee rescue efforts, said the bridge caved in under the weight of a large crowd.

The govt should have carried out the structural safety study for such an old bridge. Needs a plan to construct a new bridge. There would be many, many more like that across the country. Nobody cares until ppl die. Authorities are not held accountable. Very unfortunate. Its not without a reason that ppl say, “life is worth nothing in India”. You look at apathy on the roads, repeated traffic offences and deaths/ serious injuries, overcrowding and stampede…when do we learn our lessons? From these tragedies? When are we going to be on the front foot to prevent these avoidable deaths?

What caused the collapse of this bridge is what will cause the collapse of the Kashmiri bridge the highest railway bridge in the world, recently commissioned by PM Modi. Indian tardiness, corruption, cutting corners where cost and safety standards are concerned.and poor maintenance or no maintenance at all. A bit like the Indian airforce, the railways, dam constructions, roads ad tunnels all of which have seen spectacular collapses and destruction over the past decade at least and more so in recent times. Its time we focused more on maintenance and international standards than on China and on Muslims. Niether China nor Muslims need lift a finger to destroy us. How come overcrowding could be a cause for bridge collapsing? Tomorrow houses will start to collapse and builder will say it was overcrowded, trains will crash and railway will say it was overbooked.
