In blow to Tesla, India says not planning to cut EV import tax

NEW DELHI: India’s government said it’s not currently considering reducing taxes on imported electric vehicles, a stance that could delay Tesla Inc.’s plan to enter the market.
新德里:印度政府表示,目前没有考虑降低进口电动汽车的税收,这一立场可能会推迟特斯拉公司进入市场的计划。
“Presently, there is no proposal either to provide an exemption from local value addition cost or to provide a subsidy on the import duty on electric vehicles in India,” Som Parkash, junior minister of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, told parliament late Wednesday.

Parkash said exsting policies under the government’s “Make-in-India” push are aimed at encouraging domestic and foreign investment in the EV industry. The government launched a $3.1 billion incentive program in 2021 to boost local EV production. In addition, it’s offering incentives to companies that want to build batteries in India under a $2 billion program.

The government’s statement is an unexpected turn considering it was working on a policy that would have allowed international companies to import electric cars on concessional tax rates if they commit to eventually manufacturing in India, Bloomberg News reported last month.

The talks between Tesla and India could once again end in a deadlock. Both sides were earlier stuck in a year-long impasse as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration pushed the US automaker to produce cars locally, while Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk sought lower taxes to first sell vehicles built elsewhere at competitive prices.

There need not be any foreign investment in India at all as country from top down is full of corrupt and criminal guys, from Central Government, head of state, to company owners including employees.,it is good that Mr. Biden has canceled his trip to criminal nation like India. He better go to South America or any other SE Asian country but India.

Correct. Your comments are sensible because, right from TMan, over 98.56% of guys in Central Government are either criminals or murderers or killers holding MP portfolio. What kind of Government is this were Cabinet Ministers and MPs are former murders, killers and have spent time in rotten jails. These folks are like hired hitmen ready to kill (or get killed).

Tesla first wants to make profit in India by getting sweat heart deal on import tax and then invest a portion of that profit in manufacturing EVs. That won’t be in India’s interest. Musk should understand that this government can’t be fooled easily.

Musk wants to sell his cars which are manufactured in China. He has to invest in India if he wants to make his profit. We cannot give any special concessions to Tesla which no other EV manufacturer in India is getting.
