The EMS maglev train looks like it came straight out of a science fiction movie. Using two sets of electromagnets—one to repel and push the train above the tracks, and one to propel it forward—it quite literally flies. But in China, the maglev train is more than just a convenient means of modern transportation.

To travel 1000km it’s only 20 minutes slower, but then add in the time to get to and from the airport at both ends and get through security and possibly passport control it’s easily less. Plus with a train you can arrive in the city centre which makes the last section to your final destination much quicker, because you will be close to the underground metro system.

@sihk sahmir It's usually built directly to a hub that has a metro that takes you to the city center. For example, in Shanghai the maglev connects the aiport (which is 1 hour from downtown) to one of Pudong's metro hub, line 7 (which is about 30 minutes from downtown).
