I am from Vietnam. I’ve lived in the US for most of my life. I recently see this type of questions pop up on Quora a lot, so I thought I’d offer my personal experience, I guess as a Vietnamese American.

Back then I was in Vietnam, I met a lot of Chinese Vietnamese. I in fact went to a Chinese high school (where Vietnamese was taught as the second language). I never felt any thing negative from the Chinese students. There was some distancing, but no more than, say, “jocks” vs “nerds” in American high schools. We were kids after all.

我来自越南。我人生的大部分时间都在美国生活。最近我看到在Quora上有很多这类问题，我想以一名越南裔美国人的身份，讲讲我的个人经历。

以前我在越南的时候，遇到过很多越南籍华人。实际上，我上的是一所中文高中（在学校里，越南语被当作第二语言来教授）。我从来没有从中国学生那里感受到任何负面的东西。大家之间确实存在一定的距离感，但这就好比美国高中里 “运动健将” 和 “书呆子” 之间的那种距离，仅此而已。毕竟我们当时都还是孩子。

Later in the US, there were so many Asians at UCLA where I went and the software companies I worked for. We were just Asians. Little attention was paid to what part of Asia you were from, certainly not among us Asians ourselves. I think economic backgrounds separated us a lot more than where we were from. Rich kids play with rich kids, and such.

My kids are college-aged and pay even less attention than our generation did. When they told me about a new Asian friend, and I asked where she was from, their response would typically be “I think her parents were from Thailand. Or maybe China”. They were not sure, and didn’t care.

Not like we are losing our roots or our heritage. We do not. We just don’t differentiate ourselves by where we are from. My kids for sure would find out their friend was Vietnamese, Chinese, or Thai, as soon as they went to an Asian restaurant together. Phở, lo mein, and pad thai cannot be confused. They are all good though. Especially when they are authentic.

后来我到了美国，我就读的加州大学洛杉矶分校以及我工作的软件公司里有很多亚洲人。我们都只是亚洲人。几乎没人在意你来自亚洲的哪个地方，尤其是在我们这些亚洲人自己之间。我觉得经济背景对我们的区分作用比我们来自哪里要大得多。富家子弟就和富家子弟一起玩，诸如此类。

I'm a Chinese who communicates a lot with Vietnamese.So I think I am qualified to answer this question.I must make it clear that I personally have no hostility towards Vietnamese people, and I even have a Vietnamese girlfriend and 50+ Vietnamese good friends. But I also hate those Vietnamese nationalists on Quora and TikTok. I felt Vietnamese were friendly to Chinese until I came here and talked to the first Vietnamese nationalists, it’s Quora make me realize that there are many Vietnamese people who hate Chinese so deep, I even had a argument with a Vietnamese guy on Quora for 8 months, that's why I changed my profile picture and nickname.

I am from south-central China, I started to pay attention to Vietnam about 3 years ago when I heard that a lot of Chinese manufacturing had moved to Vietnam. I thought it might be an opportunity to make money, so I took the initiative to get to know Vietnamese people. In the past two years, I have chat with more than 100+ Vitenamese people. We often chat when we are free, so I gradually began to understand Vietnamese people’s character. So far, I can say that I know Vietnam quite well, At least I know Vietnam better than 70% Chinese people.

我是中国人，经常与越南人交流，我认为自己有资格回答这个问题。必须说明的是，我个人对越南人没有敌意，我甚至有一位越南女朋友，还有50多位越南好朋友。但我也讨厌在Quora和TikTok上的那些越南民族主义者。在我来到这里并与第一个越南民族主义者交谈之前，我一直觉得越南人对中国人很友好，是Quora让我意识到有很多越南人非常讨厌中国人。我甚至在Quora上和一个越南人争论了8个月。

I think I am qualified to answer this question. I am Chinese. I have lived in Vietnam since 2002, and I have lived there for 22 years.

I don't want to talk about Vietnam's food, scenery, architecture, cities and other things that every tourist can see at a glance.

What I want to talk about is the people here and their mental outlook.

我认为我有资格回答这个问题。我是中国人。自2002年起我就生活在越南，到现在已经有22年了。

1. Warm and strong family concept

Vietnamese people love their children very much and have a sense of responsibility for their families. I have seen Vietnamese people riding motorcycles with their children on the road many times. The children hugged the adults' waists tightly, which was very cute. Although an unhappy marriage can also bring pain, but overall, the Vietnamese have a strong sense of family, which may be slightly weaker in CanTho City.

2. Very hardworking and diligent

I have seen many young Vietnamese people who work during the day and go to night school for tutoring at night. There are all kinds of study classes here, learning computers, English, Chinese, cooking, hairdressing, sewing, law, tiktok editing, etc. There are such tutoring classes everywhere on the street. The disadvantage is that the tuition is too expensive and there are too few free ones.

1. 温暖且强烈的家庭观念

越南人非常疼爱自己的孩子，并且对家庭富有责任感。我多次看到越南人骑着摩托车，孩子紧紧地搂着大人的腰，那画面非常可爱。虽然不幸的婚姻也会带来痛苦，但总体而言，越南人的家庭观念很强，不过在芹苴市这种观念可能稍微弱一些。

2. 非常勤劳努力

我见过很多年轻的越南人，他们白天工作，晚上去夜校参加辅导课程。这里有各种各样的学习课程，包括学习计算机、英语、中文、烹饪、美发、缝纫、法律、TikTok剪辑等等。街道上到处都是这样的辅导课程。不足之处在于学费太贵了，而且免费的课程太少。

3. North-South division

Due to historical and geographical reasons, Vietnamese people are divided into three major factions: the north, the center, and the south. The north and the south don't like each other, but at the same time they all think that people in the center are poor, even though many people in the center are doctors and have high incomes.

Due to historical reasons, the wealth of many people in the south was reduced to zero overnight, so the south is more pro-American. In order to create trouble for the north, it has become the base camp for planning anti-China. It hopes to use China as a knife to create some trouble for the north. Because China's investment is mainly in the north, and it also provides 30% of electricity. In 2015, there was a big mess in the south.

It is also because of the North-South issue that Vietnam's policy has fluctuated, and even affected the North-South high-speed rail project. I hope that Vietnam can reconcile between the north and the south and complete the cohesion of the national will, otherwise it will always be ordinary Vietnamese who suffer losses.

3. 南北分歧

由于历史和地理原因，越南人分为北方、中部和南方三大派系。北方人和南方人彼此不太对付，同时他们都认为中部的人比较穷，尽管中部有很多人是医生，收入很高。

由于历史原因，南方很多人的财富一夜之间化为乌有，所以南方更亲美。为了给北方制造麻烦，南方成了策划反华的大本营。因为中国的投资主要在北方，而且中国还为越南提供了30%的电力，所以南方希望借中国这把刀给北方制造一些麻烦。2015年南方发生了一场大乱。

也正是因为南北问题，越南的政策波动很大，甚至影响到了南北高铁项目。我希望越南能够调和南北之间的矛盾，凝聚国民意志，否则吃亏的总是普通的越南民众。

4. Vietnamese women

Generally, I mean that Vietnamese women are generally more capable. Going to the fields to work, opening a company as a boss, many are Vietnamese women, this proportion is very high. Many professional managers are also women. This is very similar to China, where women have a relatively high status, much better than in Japan and South Korea.

5. Economic pressure

In 2006, when I was in Can Tho City, the daily wage of a construction worker was 48k Vietnamese dong (VND is used for all the following unless otherwise specified). In 2012, it rose to 120k~180k in Ho Chi Minh City, and now in 2024, it has risen to 400k. It is already as high as the salary of ordinary employees in some banks. Many people in Can Tho City are willing to leave their families for high wages, and many of them are divorced. There is no way, industrialization is like this.

In Ho Chi Minh City, when I asked the workers when they planned to buy an apartment or land in Ho Chi Minh City, most of them said they couldn't afford it, and the housing prices rose too high. The same thing happened in China and Japan.

Some lovely young Vietnamese people said that they planned to get married after buying an apartment. Silly children, get married as early as possible! ! It will become more and more expensive later.

5. 经济压力

2006年我在芹苴市的时候，建筑工人的日薪是4.8万越南盾（以下若无特别说明，均使用越南盾）。2012年，胡志明市的日薪涨到了12万到18万越南盾。而到了2024年，已经涨到了40万越南盾，这已经和一些银行普通员工的工资一样高了。芹苴市很多人为了高工资都愿意离开家人外出打工，很多人因此离了婚。没办法，工业化就是这样。

在胡志明市，当我问工人们打算什么时候在胡志明市买房或者买地时，大多数人都说买不起，房价涨得太高了。中国和日本也有类似的情况。

一些可爱的年轻越南人说他们打算买了房再结婚。傻孩子们，还是尽早结婚吧！以后房价只会越来越贵。

6. Education

The pressure on children's education is too great. In this respect, Vietnam and China are very similar. Both are willing to spend money on children's education. Children's schoolbags are getting heavier and heavier, and I heard that some teachers choose to perfunctorily educate in class for their cram schools. Some beautiful aspects of agricultural civilization have been ruthlessly crushed in the process of industrialization.

Vietnam's industrialization requires a large number of technical talents. Fortunately, Vietnam's illiteracy rate is very low. A large number of local talents graduate in Vietnam every year, but the number is still too small, especially the lack of senior technical workers, such as senior welders. Moreover, there are not many large-scale local international companies, which cannot provide good jobs. Many talents have to work in foreign-funded companies first.

6. 教育

孩子们的教育压力太大了。在这方面，越南和中国非常相似。两国都愿意在孩子的教育上花钱。孩子们的书包越来越重了，而且我听说有些老师为了自己的补习班，在课堂上敷衍教学。在工业化进程中，农业文明的一些美好方面被无情地碾压了。

越南的工业化需要大量的技术人才。幸运的是，越南的文盲率很低。越南每年都有大量本土人才毕业，但数量还是太少了，尤其是缺少高级技术工人，比如高级焊工。而且当地大型国际公司不多，无法提供很好的工作机会。很多人才不得不先在外资企业工作。

7. Sense of humor

Perhaps because Vietnamese is a monosyllabic language, it is easy to say some homophonic puns, which makes Vietnamese people very humorous. I often hear Vietnamese people laughing, which makes people relax.

8. Motorcycles

At first, I drove a car in Vietnam. I thought those motorcyclists were just desperate criminals, rushing around and suddenly appearing from all angles, which scared me.

Until I chose to drive a motorcycle, I realized that those cars were really stupid and slow, often occupying motorcycle lanes, and it was these stupid cars that caused traffic jams. I have seen Vietnamese people riding motorcycles with a cow. So sometimes, if you think about it from another perspective, you can "thông cảm"

Now the roads in Vietnam are much better than before, with highways and overpasses. There is a section of viaduct in Ho Chi Minh City that was built by my previous company.

8. 摩托车
一开始我在越南开车。我觉得那些骑摩托车的人就像亡命之徒，横冲直撞，突然从各个角度冒出来，把我吓坏了。

直到我也选择骑摩托车，我才意识到那些汽车真的又笨又慢，还经常占用摩托车道，正是这些笨拙的汽车造成了交通堵塞。我见过越南人骑着摩托车载着一头牛。所以有时候，换个角度想，你就能 “感同身受” 了。

Some feel threatened by Vietnam's rise as well as India's, talking about how manufacturing and other companies have been shifting away from China to other countries.

Some like Vietnam, some don't like Vietnam. In other words, Chinese and Vietnamese are best as business partners only, which is a solid neutral point-of-view to stand on. Over time, Vietnamese and Chinese would probably not get along with each other or would not work very well as “friends”. We're both too invested in national/ethnic differences and interests. Especially in the context of the East Sea/South China Sea, Vietnam and China view each other as threats.

As an American of Chinese descent, I believe the Vietnamese are a highly impressive group. To see their growth throughout history is intriguing.

I wish the country of Vietnam the best and I hope to see a proper unity between China and Vietnam, as all co unist nations should unite to spread their across the world.

When I was in the U.S a Vietnamese Pho restaurant was our alternative choice of food if we got tired of Chinese restaurants. Sometimes when we were enjoying Phos the TV in that restaurant, the Vietnamese version of Chinese dramas were played on TV, so as the Chinese songs. That made us (the Chinese students) naturally thinking that since they loved the Chinese stuffs, we might likely become friends with the Vietnamese restautrant owner, like we did with the owners of Chinese restaurants.

But the Vietnamese waitress was really cold to us and didn’t seem like to chat with us. I never figured out why until I came to Quora.

90% of the Chinese in China also don’t know that Vietnamese openly or secretly hate them. They would feel very flattered to know Vietnamese audiences love Chinese stuffs, so they would think this love should be a reciprocate one.

我在美国的时候，如果吃腻了中餐馆，越南河粉餐馆就是我们的另一个选择。有时候，我们在那家餐馆享用河粉时，电视上播放着越南版的中国电视剧，还有中文歌曲。这让我们（中国留学生）自然而然地觉得，既然他们喜欢中国的东西，那我们很可能会和越南餐馆老板成为朋友，就像我们和中餐馆老板相处那样。

但越南女服务员对我们态度真的很冷淡，似乎也不想和我们聊天。直到我上了Quora，我才弄明白原因。

中国国内90%的人也不知道越南人或明或暗地讨厌他们。要是知道越南观众喜欢中国的东西，他们会感到受宠若惊，所以他们会认为这种喜爱应该是相互的。

However in recent years Chinese people get to know that Chinese tourists are often mistreated in the Vietnamese customs for additional tips(briberies) or get cheated in Vietnam because they are Chinese, the general impression drops sharply after these incidences.

Later there was the South China sea dispute, several Taiwanese were killed in the protest. That sounds horrible.

Think that, Japanese tourists have never faced such kind of systematic discrimination or bullying when they visit China. No Japanese got hurt in China after Diaoyu Island dispute.

然而，近年来，中国人了解到中国游客在越南海关经常受到不公正对待，被索要小费，或者在越南被坑骗，经历这些事件后，中国人对越南的整体印象急剧下降。

后来又有南海争端，在相关抗议活动中几名台湾人丧生。这听起来很可怕。

想想看，日本游客来中国旅游时，从未面临过这种系统性的歧视或欺凌。在钓鱼岛争端之后，也没有日本人在中国受到伤害。

So I guess the public attitude toward Vietnam now is not good.

Sometime ago I knew it from Quora that Vietnamese citizens and American Vietamese citizens were marching to protest chinese for their plan of Special economic zones.

Cannot figure out why, cause chinese is just plannig to upgrade Hainan province to a special economic zone and rent it to foreign investors.

所以我觉得现在公众对越南的态度不太好。

前段时间我在Quora上了解到，越南公民和美国的越南裔公民举行游行，抗议中国设立经济特区的计划。

我搞不明白为什么，因为中国只是计划把海南省升级为经济特区，然后出租给外国投资者。
