Panama ditches China’s Belt and Road project in a win for Trump’s tough-guy diplomacy

Panama appears to have bowed to Donald Trump’s aggressive style of diplomacy by ditching its involvement in China’s Belt and Road initiative.

During his first overseas visit as secretary of state, Marco Rubio told the Central American country that concerns over Beiing’s “control” over the key waterway could force the US to “take measures necessary to protect its rights”.

The canal, which was built by the US and connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, is a key trade route and the US is its biggest user.

Following the high-level meeting on Sunday Jose Raul Mulino, the Panamanian president, said he had insisted there is “no doubt” his country maintains sovereignty over the Panama Canal.

But he added he had told Mr Rubio of an “important” decision not to renew the 2017 Belt and Road agreement with China to be part of its massive infrastructure projec

Every issue Trump tackles is exaggerated with his responses extreme. But I think thats just the businessman in him. IF you are planning to negotiate.. you start high, leaving yourself room to meet in the middle... which is what you hope to achieve all along.

He is also well aware who holds the cards and has the wng hand. A trade war with Mexco or Canada is bad for the U.S.... but only minimally bad. Maybe a 2% drop in GDP. But for Mexco or Canada its devastating, closer to a 50% drop which would for sure eliminate the governments of the countries. Mexco isn't going to sacrifice 50% of its GDP. A trade war with the U.S. would be equally damaging as a real war with the U.S. They have no choice but to cave into any demands we put on the table. Just or unjust.

That said, Canada is a friend and we shouldn't attempt to hurt them to get a better deal just because we can.
