Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy's statement on how India's work culture should be has triggered a massive debate on social media. Mr Murthy's statement on low productivity of Indians as compared to the developed economies and that young Indians should work 70 hours every week to make India a developed nation has gathered support as well as criticism.

He also said that in order to compete with countries like China, the country's youngsters must put in extra hours of work as Japan and Germany did after World War II. There are strong views from people on the importance of work-life balance and there are equally strong counter-views.

Mr Murthy's idea was supported by prominent figures such as JSW Chairman Sajjan indal and Ola CEO Bhavish Agarwal.

In contrast, my counterparts in the US earn 10 to 15 times more than me, even though they work fewer hours. In India, we work for minimal pay with very little work-life balance. It's extremely challenging and exhausting to survive here. I've had to put my dreams on hold just to make ends meet for my family.

I am an IT Engg. and We have a 5 day work week in my organisation. 2 days off helps me in rejuvenation, self growth and to give sometime to my family and friends . We follow 45 hr work week. It's time to give more efforts in increasing productivity instead of work time.

I am a senior employee and even I was annoyed by working 9 hr for 6 days, I think what we Indian should learn is to be more productive qualitatively and not focus more on quantity.

As an employee, I feel that instead of increasing the work hours, just use automation to do the recurring tasks while letting employees work on more productive work. Just this is enough to boost the progress in the work done for the company at lower working hours.

In my current organization, I am working with native english bosses and I can clearly see difference wether in earning, work life balance, respect and genuine deadlines. Indian bosses coming from Infosys, TCS, Wipro only know to oppress their sub ordinates and expect loyalty, dedication in return which is not possible.

Working for several MNCs for last 9 years as a Software Engineer I can say that for a brain based work or the work where you need to concentrate, the maxmum work time would be 9 hours (including 1 hours lunch) per day and 5 days per week. Remember that is not optimum it is maxmum.
I worked 13 hours/day for 6 days/week for 4 months at a scratch, the result was horrific, without booze/drugs you can't survive. Don't put your mental health/life in risk to make some body more REACH.
To all the young kids- do 9 hours work and go home then do something or save some time to do something.

Productivity doesn't depend on working hours it depends on skills, learnings , stress free mind , free from tiredness, motivation for good package of salaries, passionate works etc.

I have worked in India as well as US and the thing which you will immediately notice after working in US is that, they don’t have chai nashta break very often. They work dedicatedly in the working hours and leave home early. This is missing in india. People take breaks and productivity goes down. I think people should work 40hrs a week but with less breaks and gossips.

I live outside India for work, and I am a banker. I hold more than 9 years of experience, but last year when I came to India and thought of settling down. I gave interviews at a few places. To my surprise I was offered a smaller package with an annual salary of 6 lakhs. When I asked them why the package so low, the answer surprised me. They said I will be considering fresher in this market and that the company has to invest in training you from scratch. Working hours is not the major issue. The concern is what we get paid. The person will not be motivated to come and work for them.

I am 25 years old and I am a self employed businessman and for last 7 years I work 7th day of the week without any Sunday holiday, In business season I work 12 to 15 hours per day and in off season I work 10 to 13 hours Because I know that if I give time to my business and focus on my business then more and more my business will grow and when my business grows then I will also progress in life

I was an intern at a small firm i worked 6 hours a day , 7 days a week and the stipend was low , people consider unpaid intern as a learning experience . But in US and UK the same work gets much more stipend , its not about work hours , its about productivity and value , and service sector especially IT , is a saturated especially supply and demand . Where supply is much more compared to demand.

I think our workers should get more organized and negotiate better billing practices , they should be billed by hours they work , not a month or yearly wage.

I think average work hours should be 30-40 hr/week + psychological and motivational session once every weekend. It would help to smart and productive work.

This methods will generate more vacancies & more employee demand and minimum salary should be 30000 per month

I'm Nepali and at present working in South Korea. I work 13 to 14 hrs on weekdays and 10 hrs on Saturday. If your working time is aforementioned then the minimum payout even for non-skilled workers is 2.5 lakh INR. Huge amount of difference.

Yes . India's pay scale is very poor .
My dad goes for office from morning 8AM and returns around at 10PM ( around whop 14 hours ) . He works 6 days a week and even on Sundays sometimes . It's really matter of worry .
He is civil engineer and when I asked why he works so much ? He simply replied - that's what his company ask !! If he would work less, he would be expelled

I am a creative professional and I know when my company increased work days from 5 to 6 my productivity went drastically down and I am planning to switch now. Also when earlier I used to volunteer to give my extra hours in work without any extra competition because of my own interest in work, now I don’t wanna stay one minute extra in office… their own loss

My sister works for Wipro and she recieves her salary as per 6-8hrs workdays. But sometimes the work hours exceed 11hrs and they still don't get paid for thr overtime.
This is what we call as exploitation. People are employess not corporate slaves.

6 or 7 hours should be work hours per day. It'll lead to a good and healthy mental life of people. A good and healthy mental life will increase productivity else they'll be trapped in a web from where most of us won't be able to escape.People are already suffering in the corporate sector due to the excessive amount of work and pressure

40hrs per week is ideal working time to balance mental fatigue thus increasing productivity.
