NEW DELHI: The bullet train project in India is facing a challenge from Mango and sapota (the fruit popularly known as 'chiku') growers in Maharashtra who are backed by local politicians. The fruit growers are up in arms protesting against the proposed acquisition of their land + for the bullet train project - unwilling to surrender their land without alternative employment guarantees.

The protests by these farmers stand as a major hindrance for the government and are likely to delay the December deadline for completing all land acquisition formalities for the $17 billion Japan-backed project.

Failure to procure the bullet train land by the deadline would delay disbursal of soft-loans by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), a government development body, which is reviewing the project next month, two senior officials with the state-run Indian Railways told Reuters.

To assuage Japan’s concerns, Indian officials have sought a meeting this month with transport ministry officials in Tokyo, one of the Indian officials said. The government wants the project’s completion target to be advanced by a year to 2022, the 75th year of Independence.

Bullet train from central Mumbai to Ahmedbad (main city to city) will take you maxmum 2 hours. Travelling by plain, go to airport and wait there and fly 45 minutes and again from airport to city will take you much longer. I have been to Japan several times and bullet trains are most punctual transportation even by seconds. yes I know this is india but the system built by Japan will definitely function well. Japan has 50 years experience of running bullet trains. A fool will travel from Osaka to Tokyo by air unless connecting international flight. I travelled 1973 giving up my airline ticket (for sake of experience comfort and convenience of downtown city to city).

Things go hand in hand, yes we need bullet train, sattelite, etc. India always lacking behind in using the technology.if bullet train becomes success in one route. may be all railway may convert to bullet train. when the planes started some guys asked do we really need plane when the roads are not good for vehicles. Farmers should get their dues and govt should move on. During freedom fight some people asked . do we really need freedom ?? if farmers vegetable move faster , they can transform their goods to any part of the country over night.
