Is the negative image and stereoty of India by the West and its media hurting the country? Is it hurting fields such as tourism?

Negative but true image unfortunately. India is no longer a secular country in anyone's wildest imagination. I am regular tourist who used to go to India twice a year for last 10–12 years but now am very careful about where I should go in India cause I as a non-hindu don't feel very safe there.

No.

The negative image and media portrayal by the west is not hurting India nor its tourism.

It’s the negative image and media portrayal by the Indians which is hurting India and it’s tourism.

Just check any Indian’s profile on Quora. He or she must have written something insulting and negative about India. Every Indian reading this post is guilty as charged. Yes, I know you hate your own country.

Same goes with media. And they also do ir because Indians like to hear and talk only bad things about their country.

So western media and westerners just pick what Indians share.

And it affects not only India’s tourism but every sector. Nobody wants to do business with someone who has a bad image.

Indians are the only people in the world who hate their own country.

I believe i know the answer because as an Indian and a deep observer and (over)thinker, I have actually actively tried to figure this out.

1/ A significant share of people who can afford to travel to India from the west- would be well educated people. Although they would still be unsure of the stereotypes, they have likely had enough multicultural experience, discussions etc to frame at least a slightly just opinion. Indian tourism is booming gradually. Is it booming fast enough? That question brings me to the second part- how much of tourism India deserves in the first place-

2/ Indians are hurting India more than west or anyone else ever could. If I had to name countries that would be the perfect target for a hypothetical second wave of colonialism, India would be one of the top contenders. Indians who are not even fluent in English, are not cultured, know nothing about art , history, the world, different languages or much else, are the ones who are actually the noisiest in flaunting their western-ness and lack of Indian-ness. Literally people from EVERY section and EVERY level of intelligence are flocking to the west. Flocking to the west used to bring more culture, more knowledge, but not anymore. Sorry to say but I think in any country- especially countries like the USA and India, de ocracy has caused big issues in misinterpreting equal rights. India needs to fix its culture and its mentality before pointing the finger at others.

Not really. India is hurting itself. Is the corruption and their arrogance, corruption is a way of life, from the very lowest to the very highest, there is no getting away from it. Arrogance? Just ask any Indian they are the best at everything. A lot of people, me included are not impressed by that.

sure there is no problem being proud of your country I am as well, but it’s not nice, having it shoved down your throat, people claiming they are better than others. Is not the way to go.

Sorry to burst your bubble but nobody in the west cares all that much about India.

The image of india in the mind of a westerner is still that of elephants roaming the narrow streets.

Of horses and carriages that transport people in the villages,

A land of fakirs and sadhus with the smell of burning incense in the markets.

Of temples and palaces of the former kings,

Of a land of poverty stricken people who live in thatched huts without any power and clean drinking water.

Even film producers rarely look beyond the stereotype.

Its just assumed that india is still living in its pre-independence state or even farther back.

I'm not making this up. My friends from around the world including BC the US and Germany keep mailing me these silly questions despite the internet at the touch of their fingertips.

Without a hint of sarcasm, to them there are only a handful of wealthy people. The rest all ride cycles and there isn't any middle-class.

Ask yourself! Why is it that a lot of the middle class indians return back to India. It isn't just racism based on nationality.

Its racism they experience in its purest form as they are categorised as the poor labourers who have nothing in their country.

So regardless of an indian’s proficiency in English or his degrees he's still considered as an individual from a 3rd world country.

So No it is not affecting tourism. Most westerners are either apalled by india from the onset.

While surprisingly there is an encouraging number who are fascinated by the appeal of the days of the Raj.

Regardless of whether the media paints a positive picture or not most westerners will still conjure up the same image in their mind.

Unfortunately, the negative image and stereoty of India by the West and its media can be damaging to both the culture and its citizens. This type of media coverage often paints a one-dimensional portrait of India, focusing solely on poverty and violence while ignoring its beauty, culture, and progress. These negative stereotypes can lead to biased decision-making and even racism, which can have far-reaching effects on the country's citizens. It is important that we recognize the complexty of India and its people, and strive to create a more accurate and balanced representation in the media.

India is an acquired taste. Meaning that it is not a country for everyone in the world to visit.

Do you know why amusement parks, Dubai, Las Vegas, China, New York City have so many visitors, it is the glitter and glamour that money and lights bring.

But those who are open to enlightenment, will prefer India, and explore beauties like Kerala, which has been named one of the 50 places one should visit before they die.

People who are interested in India are those who are open to change, exploration, beauty, culture, wisdom, spirituality and the like. We live in a world of material things, and therefore very few has learned the true meaning of life and what is the greatest place to visit aka India.

But the negative image the media portrays is an issue. For instance, people assume India is run by a Hindu nationalist government. Never in the history of India has any Prime Minister, let alone the current PM Narendra Modi, ever declare that India is a Hindu nation or change the fact that India is a secular republic.

People in India also eat beef, but they assume people cannot. These inaccurate stereotypes do lessen the amount of tourism to India.

But like I said, INDIA is an acquired taste, only for the refined people.

One man's opinion and hopefully not an exaggeration: I don't think India ever had a great image in antiquity or modern times. We have always been non-threatening wusses, infidels to various barbarians first from the west and central Asia and then Europe.

Having said all of that, I don't know if we, as a culture, ever cared what others think of us. That's actually fantastic. We never valued turning ourselves into '50s Cuba or current day Caribbean countries, poor hosts to vacationing westerners for living.

So, no we are not hurting in tourism because of the image.

The negative image and stereoty of India is one that stems from India's double standard. Arrogant hegemony in India and Hindu extremism at the same time is the bane of India.

Krishnan Unni Madathil

Not quite. India has been doing fairly well in terms of receiving guests inwards. The negative imagery is sometimes warranted and should be a pointer to Indian establishments to up their game in terms of facilities and ambience.

Is India as dirty and chaotic as it is portrayed in the western media?

I am not aware as to how India was portrayed in Western Media. But India had huge problem of unclean towns. Since Modi took over as P.M. in 2014, he embarked on a mission of Swatchh Bharat means Clean India. That is a successful mission n now India is quite clean, may not be as clean as Western developed nations. Chaos - yeah the huge population is a good enough reason to create chaos.
