India’s move to ban certain rice exports has sparked some panic buying in various countries, with videos on social media showing bags of the staple food flying off the shelves and long lines outside grocery stores.

From the US to Canada and Australia, reports of overseas Indians stocking up are going viral. Some shops have imposed buying limits, while others hiked prices to cash in on the frenzy. Indian restaurants worry about a shortage.

Rice is vital to the diets of billions in Asia and Africa. India’s restrictions, which apply to shipments of non-basmati white rice, are aimed at controlling local prices, but they add to strains on global food markets that have already been roiled by bad weather and the worsening conflict in Ukraine.

In the US, videos show people caught up in a buying frenzy. Bloomberg could not independently verify their authenticity. Some South Asian grocery stores in Toronto have also implemented buying restrictions and increased retail prices, according to CityNews.

Govindasamy Jayabalan, President of the Malaysian Indian Restaurant Owners Association, said he’s concerned this will lead to a shortage of rice and increase the cost of making dishes such as thosai and rice vermicelli.

Please read the fine print, the ban is just on NON-BASMATI rice variety, Basmati which is in demand abroad is not being banned. Given the erratic weather conditions leading to slightly low domestic production, India wants to play safe. Everyone will agree that charity begins at home, all nations will first take care of its own population first.

In spite of ban of non-basati rice exports, the local market prices are surging fast. The govt.should give strictures to black marketers not to indulge in hoarding of stock creating artificial shortages in the local markets.

Problem of NRIs created by NRIs eating habits only. They do not change eating habits even years after having settled abroad, this has created India’s food export industry. Desis should learn to go local in food habits. First priority of food grown in India is for Indian citizens.

8 years back India was leading in the export of textiles and footwear. because of govt apathy, we work as sub-contractors to other countries. does this ban brings down the prince of rice in India. NO NO NO. currently india is no 1 in rice export which we will be loosing soon. now many of the textiles are made out of bangladesh, turkey. we are not finding India name GOD can only save us
