Flying the COMAC C919 - China's Game Changer?
I just flew on China’s new airplane COMAC C919 from Shanghai to Chengdu with China Eastern Airlines.
It’s been more than 3 years since I last visited mainland China. The flight was a pleasant and modern one for me and many other aviation enthusiasts. Powered by the same CFM leap engines, the C919 shares many similarities with Airbus and Boeing. My flight took almost 3 hours, flying at 34,000 ft with a maxmum speed of Mach 0.78.
During the flight, I experienced both C919 Business and Economy class seat features, the lavatory and galley. The middle seat width on C919 is half an inch wider to compensate for the shoulder room like A220. I spoke with the operating crew about their training and operation on the new C919.
At the end of the flight, I gave my verdict as a passenger on the C919. In short, the C919 needs to prove itself in commercial service that it can meet the economics and the required efficiency. Currently, there are over 500 orders by Chinese airlines and leasing companies but the future success depends on foreign certification of this airplane.
As the C919 is mainly used for domestic travel in China, its biggest competitor at the moment is not Boeing or Airbus, but China's efficient high-speed rail system.
That's why the USA keep provides engines and avionics etc. they can profit from it for decades. But if comac reached to bulid thousands of them, still a small potion of the plane market, but will be noticeable, when that happens.....then is not all about money gained, you know.
HSR system has always been a competitor with the airlines in China since 2011. However, by purchasing C919 instead of 737/320 by the Chinese carriers, C919 competes directly with the peers in the same class, instead of the HSR
Not really, with C919. Less Boeing and Airbus will be bought. And the myth of C919 can't fly overseas are nonsense. There are 27 countries accepting CAA certification which means C919 can fly to other 27 countries
Yes, China’s domestic competition is fiercer than anywhere else in the world. Being able to gain a foothold in China has already proved everything. As for whether other countries buy or not, I think the ideology of some countries is the primary factor
You're simply too underrated the C919！ Even though the high speed rail does impact the aviation in China, the journey time is still too long for HSR than plane if you have to travel from N to S or E to W and vice versa. Besides, there're still 900 million in population still haven't take the plane yet. There're still room for the Chinese aviation industry to grow.
China stole the blue print for this plane from a think it was a US company also all there’s parts are my from other countries only a few parts are made from China which are the cheap parts. Also I also heard that there was 5 radars for the bottom of the plane to make sure your not close to a mountain or going to hit stuff but they said they only needed 3 so they can count down cost but that’s not good it’s very dangerous. They put money first other then there people’s safety. They cheaped out on a lot of stuff for this plane
@frankiedesam8624 Nice description of B737 max. I am more than happy to take safer C919.
China is putting touches on domestic engine. It’s the leverage. America wants to profit while narrowing window is still open.
Hi Sam! I'm from Brasil but, I have so much respect with Chinese People, and your tradictions during years. I believe this amazing aircraft will be a wonderfull start in a comercial Chinese Aviation fighting with other... Thanks for sharing with us this incredible aircraft.
Every passenger in air flight should remember the dedicated efford of all those contributors working in the manufacturing plants, whether in the US, or EU, or in China. Without their contribution, there is no safe flight to talk about. Lets us salute their unwavering efford to make commercial air flight safe for everyone.
First impression is I like the C919. Cabin appears spacious, seats very good and lavatory good too. Overall I would be happy to fly. Glad you made this vlog. Thanks.
The significance of C919 is not only the aircraft, but the industrial structure brought by the aircraft, but also the industrial structure behind it, as well as industrial upgrading. Just imagine the high-speed rail that was just born that year, which will bring huge commercial development to China.
Love that you spoke Chinese in this video. Been studying Chinese for 3 months now and I could actually understand quite a bit! Comprehensible input really helps. (3/5h a day)
3 months? That’s really impressive
Yeah, but Chinese is too hard for foreigners to learn
Keep learning it!我相信你能學好的
@bd8594 Yeah! I was surprised as well to be honest. Still studying Chinese everyday. :)
@zhiweiho6120 I study Simplified Chinese but will definitely study Traditional after. :)
The leg space in economy seating looks surprisingly spacious. The galley and bathrooms being more spacious than the B737 and A320 is also surprising. How is it the same width and height as the A320 but more spacious on the inside? I normally don't like narrow-body airplanes but I think I'd be amenable to using one in the configuration that this C919 used.
No matter whether you like China or not, it indeed made it! For the civil aviation market, having one more competitor is always better for us passengers and aviation enthusiasts. This means that we will be able to sit on more comfortable and safer planes in the future.
Congratulations to COMAC. Looking to go to China in a few years and want to visit many places throughout the country. I will undoubtedly book flights on their planes.
Looks cool. As an aviation enthusiast, I would definitely want to try it but I don't think the West will easily certify it because it will hurt their business even with all the Western systems on board.
China can make a all home made plane，remeber the y20 is a Boeing777 class big plane，much bigger than c919. The use of the western system is the invitation to the certification
C919 is really like those DIY PCs where you get all the great parts from all over the world and assemble it into one of a kind.
Awesome, thanks for sharing this first experience on the C919, let's see if they are able to expand into the western market.
The C919 looks like a fantastic jet, and after a few years proving itself in China, there will likely be a market for it in the rest of the world, but it especially looks like China Eastern Airlines knows how to provide a great in-flight experience.
It seems like a remarkable aircraft. The Chinese people must be proud. Hopefully international certification occurs in the near future. I'd fly the C919 for sure.
Any competiton is great for the industry, especially for the passengers. Hope Comac do well and bring us more advanced aviation just like China's railway and other transportation.
More competition is always good. Here’s to more plane manufacturers entering the market with safe and good products. Well done!
A big and inspiring milestone for chinese aviation industry.
That engine and wing view looks like a 787 or A350....beautiful
