VADODARA/ AHMEDABAD: Passengers travelling from Chandigarh to Ahmedabad on an IndiGo Airlines flight had their hearts in their mouths for a few minutes on Monday night, when the aircraft suddenly climbed steeply back into the sky just after its wheels had touched the runway at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Passengers on the flight, which was supposed to land at 9.15 pm, were frightened and confused by the touchdown-takeoff.

"The plane started descending at about 8.45pm, but as soon its wheels touched land the pilot suddenly pulled up and the flight was airborne once again. We got panicky as nobody understood what had happened," Dr Neel Thakkar, a Vadodara resident, who was among the passengers on Flight 6E 6056, told TOI."The plane circled in the air for 20 minutes before landing finally," Thakkar said.

"The unexpected manoeuvre put the lives of over 100 passengers at risk," he claimed. Thakkar sent an email to the airline, the DGCA and Union civil aviation minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday.

Sources at SVPI airport privy to the development told TOI: "The aircraft had recorded an unstable approach to the ground and, therefore, the air traffic controller at SVPI Airport immediately directed the pilot to take a go-around, i.e., to take off and land properly again. No injury or ailment to any passenger was reported."

In his mail, Thakkar wrote that he enquired about the incident with the pilot after landing. "Pilot Jagdip Singh responded that this is a routine communication issue and the airline didn't have ATC clearance to land the aircraft," Thakkar told TOI.

"If the ATC didn't clear the landing, then how could the aircraft land in the first place? I also approached the duty manager of IndiGo Airlines, who told me that an inquiry can be conducted if I sent an email to the authorities concerned. I hope they do a detailed inquiry," Thakkar added.

Its common its called long float and its due to pilot not maintaining proper glide slope and touching down outside touchdown zone so to avoid runway excursion this is given. I am ATC and instructor at IGIA

This is not unheard of. The passenger has to thank the ATC and pilot for not risking their lives by embarking on a go around immediately instead of continuing. This passenger not an expert on aircraft operation, just because he is a passenger. So he has to comment within his realm of knowledge

Indian passengers panic too much .....as soon as the wheels touch the ground you will hear the clicking sound of every joker removing his seat belt.. and they will jump up to open the over head baggage compartment even when the place is taxing on the runaway..

Some passengers are naive and try to show off without using common sense that there had to be some strong reason which made the pilot take such a step. He is an expert in flying a plane at any time superior to the passengers technically, and mentally in such a situation. Isn't his own life at stake? Does he not have his own family waiting for him at home? Grow up or stop flying.

I Have heard this is common. specially in cross winds condition, where it is not safe to land. or pilot has doubt if the aircraft cannot land safely.

Everybody has to bear in mind that pilot too has a family and it's his responsibility to take care of the machine he has been entrusted with. This cases do happen when there are strong cross winds making landing a bit difficult. Also in case the aircraft is not aligned or the glide is not in accordance to the required landing, they have to adjust. There is nothing to be alarmed of. Yes, everybody had the right to enquire but to blame it entirely on pilot or the ATC, IMO, is not correct.

What percentage of flights do this and fly back maneuver out of the total flights landing in one day? I am guessing less than 1%. So yeah, there is a definite need to draw attention.

A " Go Round" is initiated where there is an obstruction / runway incursion when the plane is about to land. A plane has to complete certain vital parameters to be enabled to land. Otherwise the approach is termed "Unstable", the landing is aborted and a " Go round " performed.

This is perfectly routine nothing to be alarmed about.

This is no news at all. When requisite parameters are not established during approach/ landing, the safest course of action is to go around. I am an airline pilot.

This is an issue made out of nothing.  Questions will be asked. But making a mountain out of molehill out of ignorance is most stupid to say the least.

It is nothing to panic, but the crew should have immediately informed the passenegers about it, which as per this report they should have. I am rather happy that in that split second command, the pilot kept cool and was able to control the craft.

Pilot to be appreciated and also ground staff for avoiding slightest risk. To bark on a non issue have become norm. Better they travel in train or cab in their future journeys if they are so scared.
