Underwhelming reaction from China after Ding's historical win

After Ding's historical win against Russian Gm Ian Nepomniachtchi and becoming the first Chinese player to win the World Chess Champion, it is logical to assume that Chinese chess lovers are celebrating this victory. However, this event fails to receive any attention in China.

Across Chinese social media apps, all posts relating to Ding averages around 10 likes and 1 comment, which is incredibly underwhelming considering the caliber of the tournament. Meanwhile, the topic #丁立人夺国象世界棋王, which translate to #Ding Liren crowned the world champion, received 0 reads and discussions.

Chess is just not that popular in China. Imagine an American wins a major Go tournament, the reaction will be even more underwhelming

5DSpence

This exactly. Probably like .001% of Americans were aware when, for the first time, an American reached 9 dan, the highest rank in go (very roughly the equivalent of the GM title).

One of my best friends is Chinese and she told me she had never heard of him but saw him on Chinese social media last night...I know that's anecdotal but she made it sound like it was a significant news story.

vics80

Ding is a man for the world, not just China. It's okay

elppaple

Wng at chess in China is like wng at badminton in the US.

sunshinepower01

Lol, this is sadly accurate. As an avid badminton fan, I remember hearing practically nothing from US news outlets when Bach/Gunawan (representing the US) won the Badminton World Championship in 2005, which is a big deal for the rest of the world (mostly for the countries in Asia).

severedfromreality

It all boils down to interest, in India general public didn't know about chess except the 2013 chess championship. Since pandemic there has been more interest and engagement. Even Pragg beating Magnus online is national headlines.

Hopefully with Dings win, there is more interest and celebrate Ding.

Throwawayacct1015

Most people in China don't even know this event was happening.

It actually makes me mad because each year the NBA playoff finals gets #1 on Weibo there but Ding Liren making history in his own country doesn't even make top 10 trending.

WilsonRS

Why does it make you mad? Do you think Chess is more deserving? Fact is sports like basketball is far more mainstream and popular by many magnitudes. Less people being excited about Ding's win doesn't have to take away your own excitement for it.

Specific-Ad7257

I don't think it's anything to be mad about. There are plenty of people who I don't know, who have probably made history in their sports that are American, that I don't know about because the sport just isn't that popular here. Just because of the sheer numbers China has a fair number of chess players, and in their chess community this is just as big as the news as it is in the rest of the world

stringsandthings3

How could these numbers possibly be accurate? Every man, woman and child in China read over 70 posts each about the LoL world final?

Valcatraxx

Chinese chess is more popular in China than western chess, who would've known?

Only 新浪棋牌 has been regularly posting. Their post after Ding's victory amassed 2.2k likes, 600 shares and 268 comment so far.

央视新闻 just posted 30 minutes ago, and being the major news channel, obviously it quickly amassed 2000 likes and is expected to continue growing to the 10ks.

人民日报 posted around 6 hours ago and has almost 2k likes.

I think it's starting to gain much more traction in China. More and more posts are arising in Chinese social media after Ding's victory, as opposed to during the match when there were barely any posts.

apocolypticbosmer

China’s thing is Go, not chess.

StandAloneComplexed

Don't forget X iangqi, or Chinese chess. You can find people playing it in parks everywhere.

LepsGo

The chess bubble is not that big in many countries.

Valuable-Sleep5252

The chess scene is China is simply not that vibrant as the rest of the world. But during the finals and the tie breaks the live streams etc had upwards of tens of thousands of people watching. Not great numbers still but it is a step in the right direction! At least multiple news agencies reported his win and he was trending on Zhihu. I can only hope Ding gets more sponsors and support from companies now that he is the champ.

hostileb

But Ding's name will be on the wikipedia list for at least two centuries. He will be everywhere on lists because there are only seveneteen world champions. It would take 300 years for there to be 50 world champions.

PieCapital1631

It will be bittersweet. I hope the Chinese chess players (and X iangqi, Go and Shogi) players take this win into their hearts and use it to improve, and get more funding and support. I hope that then goes to help settle Ding mentally, and be comfortable wearing the crown. (Ding wins World Championship in his current volatile mental state -- what's he going to be like when he rediscovers his Terminator mode?)

the_dry_for_kelp

Chess isn't universal, so it makes sense that in some parts of the world people don't care about it much.

I mean, what percentage of Chinese people can even play the game at all? Or hell, what's the percentage in the West? Living in Europe, I know European adults who don't know the rules, both people in my life and public figures. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen (both English) infamously don't know how to play chess

agYain

I think 90s of last century is the peak of chess in China, I mean popularity. Sincerely, we need a ppl with more entertaining spirits to promote chess in China to attract teenagers. That’s why Go has a much better popularity.

The_Onion_Baron

Was talking to a Chinese colleague of mine, and he's convinced that Ding's win will have little to no effect on the popularity of chess in China.

Women in China have been terrifically successful in chess, and it hasn't wiggled the needle.

China also has terrifically popular abstract strategy games already, like xangqi and go, so chess just doesn't have a niche to fill.

Globalsilver69

That’s unfortunate to hear, kinda ironic considering China has some amazing players

FL8_JT26

Not every sport/game is going to be popular in every country and there's nothing wrong with that.

Giraffelack

Chess is a minor sport in China compared to Go and other games. Different culture/different sports and games. Unfortunate, but I wonder how good of a Go player ding is

Pristine-Woodpecker

Chinese chess is way more popular than go in China AFAIK.

cpmei

Chinese chess is much more popular than chess in China. You see people play it in parks everywhere.

cirad

I have an electronic Chinese chess board from Novag. Looks like a fun game but kind of hard getting used to
