People always say,Friendship struck by many countries is based on interests, which's one hundred percent right, and as a common example, when a country insult China, we Chinese boycott their country's goods, soon their economy is hit, they apologize and say we are friends with China. Then we Chinese tend to accept an apology and the day goes on, we will still do business with that country. But we Chinese clear in my heart, we know what they want. However, that is not the case with Serbia(and Pakistan). China know who can fully trust in, we help each other, and this special relationship is never can be bought with money.

As I explained countless times here, every country’s action is driven by it’s national interests. There can no love, friendship or any irrational love between two or more states. So what interests are crucial in the relationship of Serbia and China ?

Well one of the most crucial strategies of China in the 21st century is the famous One Belt One Road Initiative. To put it simply China is working really hard to make a web of infrastructural projects in Asia and Europe with the goal to connect them to China. And Serbia is one on the many important bridges China needs to cross. In Europe the new silk road will go through the Balkans. That’s why China made several important investments. They bought the largest port in Greece and one of the largest in Europe - Piraeus. They next crucial project will be the construction of Belgrade - Budapest railway (well the railway already exsts but it’s outdated).

Serbia is (unlike other Balkan countries) really keen on cooperating with China. Serbia’s goal was to become an EU member state but the more time it past that goal is further away. In my opinion Serbia will probably never join the EU. On the other hand China offers real cooperation, real projects, real investments. This is Chinese way of becoming a superpower. Unlike the United States, the won’t come with bombs, but with dollars. Again, I’m not sure how beneficial will this be in Serbia, but it surly is more that the EU’s attitude.

Personally, almost every Chinese over 25 years old love Serbia, well, to be more precise, the Yugoslavia, thanks to the two old movies introduced from Yugoslavia to China in the early 1970s: Мост/Most(Bridge) and Валтер Брани Сарајево/Valter Brani Sarajevo(Walter Defends Sarajevo). Though in the 1990s, Sarajevo becomes the capital of B&H.

Lots of people didn’t even know who was that Milosevic, and what he had done, but obviously, we hate bullies!

I can’t say for all Chinese, and of course not for the Serb as I haven't been there, nor know any. However, I assume both Serb and Chinese remember the bombardment of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, so to quote someone answered on Zhihu (the Chinese Quora) to a similar question, when we extend our help to the helpless Serbia in the Covid19, not only do we see their faces, but also ours of helplessness, grief and sorrow back in 1999

Relations between Serbia and China have always been good, especially since the tragedy in 1999 when the Chinese embassy in Serbia was bombed by the US. Several Chinese people were killed in the attack.

Today, China considers Serbia, along with Poland, to be one of its key allies in deepening of economic cooperation with Europe and implementation of Belt & Road Initiative (BRI) projects (China highlights Serbia trade as Beiing signs 22 deals). Political and cultural relations between China and Serbia are strong, with the economic ones develo faster than ever. There is still a lot of room for improvement: in 2017 Serbia exported only USD 62 mil worth of merchandise to China, while it imported USD 1.6 bil. worth of goods from China.

Without question, Serbia is one of the very few European friend for P.R. China.

First, I am not saying this in hostility towards other Europeans, not at all I am simply stating a geopolitical fact. An average Chinese would not prefer an average Serbian over an Italian BUT as a country, Serbia is China friend.

I agree that is a very strong possibility and I never hide the fact that I like Russia a lot. BUT politics is always muddy water, it is never that clean, so I don't know why Serbia is being picked on.

Regardless, Serbia is in Europe but definitely not of the western geopolitical camp. That makes Serbia much more sympathetic to China's geopolitical position and interest.

So without a doubt, these two countries are friends. Another European exception is Greece. Somehow Greece has a lot geopolitical concerns against U.S.A.

I don't see any drastic Change for Serbian, Russian and Chinese relationship, so we should stay as friends for a long time.

In response to one person's response below, about atrocities carried out by Serbian. I must say I am very sympathetic to innocent life lost. But in term of geopolitics, morality is always the last in the list, for almost all major powers.

I refuse to believe that NATO bombing of Serbia to be humanitarian than political. Don't forget when there is much worse Massacre in Rwanda, there is virtually no reactions from the west, except in the media.

Geopolitics is never about morality or ethical concerns. It may capitalize on morality but it is always means to an end.

Another good example is Obama 's role with Japan. Japanese committed horrible crimes in China during WWII. But when i is holding a parades in honor of victory over Japan back in 2015, Obama refused to come.

All western countries refused to come.

Why? Do they agree with the Japanese atrocities? No. Are they sympathetic to the innocent lives lost, yes.

They choose not to come because Japan is the trump card to contain a rising China. Obama actually went to pay respect to the nuclear bomb victims in Japan instead. He 即做婊子又立牌坊。
