Is the Nepal-India relations similar to Vietnam-China relations?
I find an interesting circle in Chinese history. When China was busy with wars against its northern neighbors, Vietnamese would steal some lands from China. After finishing the war in the north, China usually had to start extra wars in the south to get those lands back. This circle actually had been seen several times in history. But right now it is just a little more complicate for China to get back the lands stolen by Viet when China was dealing with the threaten from the USSR, since Viet have someone strong enough to back them up.
I think India is lucky…at least Nepol would never try to invade India.

What do you think of the relationship between China and Vietnam?
It’s complicated. China and Vietnam enjoy fast growing bilateral trade and cooperation in many fields but they also disagree on many things.
If you have been following the news about Vietnam for the last few days, you most probably have heard (from the BBC) that China is pushing Vietnam to abandon the oil project Block 07/03 off Vietnamese shore.
What you have probably missed are similar blocks nearby like Lan Tay and Lan Do. All have been met with Chinese pressure since the begng but nevertheless went through. Block 07/03 is facing the same situation.
The Blue Whale (Ca Voi Xanh) project between PetroVietnam and ExxonMobil will be an even more interesting case due to its sensitive location.
Vietnam has been inviting countries to explore oil in its EEZ, including Russia, UK, India and now Italy.
Short Answer: No
In many ways, it is like China-Pak relationship, but still not entirely.
1..China and Pak have no ethnic/cultual connect. China treats Pak as their ‘step little brother’ and Pak Govt happily accept that fact. They sit in China’s lap.
2. people of Pak have no other option left but to accept this fact but to take whatever china throws at them just because they are economically heavily depend on China. Plus, their big fat ego does not allow them to bend before their actual big brother - India.
3. However the people of Pak is not completely in romance with China. Only their Govt is.
As for Nepal, they have strong cultural and economic ties and share a common ethnic. They have open border. Both citizens are allowed to visit, live and work in both countries without any visa or work permit. Infact there are around 40k Nepalese serving in Indian army. You would not hear that kind of friendship anywhere else in the world very often.
India considers Nepal as their little brother for some reason. Both Nepalese people and their DO NOT like it. They want India to treat them as equel. Nepal heavily depends on India for its day today trade as it is a land locked country. But, unlike Pakistan Nepal has another option. ie to side with China to get some leverages from them and possibly intimidate India since China is India’s rival (in India’s eyes)
Point 3. It is a slightly different scenario here. Most Nepalese are neutral when it comes to the ‘Love factor’ towards India and China. However, there is a niche percent of Nepalese who are slanted towards India. As for the Nepalese Govt, they LOVE China while their people really do not. PS: Both Chinese and Nepalese regimes are and they are natural allies.
Hope I answered your question. Excuse my broken English.
India and Nepal are twins.
As the Buddha come from Nepal，and Buddhism is seen as India religion.
They share same culture at the begng.
China and Vietnam are ex-lovers.
Vietnam learn a lot of thing from China at cohibitation and later.
No not at all India-Nepal relation is not similar to Vietnam-China relation because India is not trying to grab the territory of Nepal while China claims South China Sea which is defined as “Nine Dash Line” as their entire territory thus denying the rights which Vietnam has over South China sea.
While India haven't claimed Kathmandu to be their territory we haven't sended our soldiers to occupy Nepal no war was fought in between India and Nepal while Sino-Vietnamese war was fought between China and Vietnam. India haven't denied any rights of Nepal. And Nepal supports India's permanent unsc seat.
So India-Nepal relation is not similar to China-Vietnam relation India supports Nepal with economic aid and develo Infrastructure though there are some border issues between India-Nepal but they are not like the border conflict between Russia-Ukraine

I think answer of Alok Sharma is enough here to explain whether the Nepal-India relations similar to Vietnam-China relations or not.

I don't think Nepalis will understand but let's be fair, you Nepalis are, in a bit, luckier than Vietnamese than anytime you mention
You fought for illegal wars for the Indians, but at least you have never been invaded. China invaded us many times and they are even violating Vietnamese sea border.
You get imposed by India? Okay. Here, Chinese immigrants are stealing Vietnamese resources. Happy now? And China pollutes our country, get it?
I am typically Vietnamese of Chinese origin, so this is what I want Nepalis to know. We fought, and keep working with them. We watch Chinese dramas and we may use Chinese stuffs, but if China attacks us we will retaliate back. We taste for thousand years, unlike Nepalis with different history toward India
This is Vietnam. We work and fight together. In peace, we set jobs. In war we fight. This is what we deal with our giant Northern neighbor.
Is Nepal to India, what Vietnam is/was to China?
I think there are similar there:
Nepal and India both share the basic value of being Hindu nation majority and Indian civilization. Along with India, Nepal is the other remaining Hindu state. But currently, Indianophobia in Nepal is rising due to many factors, such as smuggling, China, economic sanctions…
Vietnam and China both belong to Sinosphere world. Vietnam is heavily influenced by China and they are viewed as “little China”. But same as Nepal, hostile between Vietnam and China started many years in history and even the 1979 war is a painful memory. Sinophobia is common in Vietnam
Nepal and India have disputed over Kalapani region; but India and Nepal have never been to war and surprisingly, many Nepalis are living in India and sending money to Nepal, the largest foreign economic source of Nepal lies in India.
China and Vietnam are not in good term. I want to say again, China and Vietnam fought many times so anti-Chinese is common strongly. And there are not many Vietnamese living in China unlike Nepalis to India
While I say yes in many terms of aspects, the differences also exst as well
No, India- Nepal relations are not similar to China-Vietnam relations.
First of all, India and Nepal have never gone to war as China-Vietnam have. This should be sufficient to answer but I will go a bit further.
Second, there are vast number of Nepalese living and earning in India and share a close people to people connect with India. I doubt that is true with China-Vietnam.
Third, India and Nepal are not fighting on any major territorial conflict as China and Vietnam on South China Sea and the world is watching.
Fourth, China and Nepal do not share as strong as friendship as India and Vietnam do.
Fifth, During the recent devastating earthquake in Nepal, India was the first country to send help into Nepal. Can you ever imagine that between China and Vietnam?
Last but not the least, India and Nepal share common interests. India treats Nepal as its younger brother and this relationship will last despite of a few small misunderstanding here and there.
Is Nepal to India, what Vietnam is/was to China?
Being Pakistani, I say, yes.
Nepalis have tensions with India, due to the biggest reason: Kalapani. Nepal fears India would occupy their territory, as India has, successfully, forcing assimilation among the Gorkhas into the Indian society and now Indians dominate everything of Nepal. Nepal, is like, a little puppet of India. So even being Hindu majority, Nepalis have a lot of hostilities toward Indians.
Vietnamese have tensions with China due to its past. Most Westerners are very ignorant when they just criticize Vietnam without realizing how Chinese try to vandalize Vietnam for many years. Even belong to Sinosphere nations, China has been, cruelly, murdering many Vietnamese before. I was inspired by how Vietnamese fought China and kept up their identity. Thus, this was the reason why I started to suspect China since.
