NEW DELHI: Amid criticism in various quarters, including from netizens and other animal rights organisations, the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) on Friday withdrew its appeal to celebrate February 14 as "Cow Hug Day", saying it was doing so on direction from the government.

"As directed by the competent authority and ministry of fisheries, animal husbandry and dairying, the appeal issued by the AWBI for celebration of Cow Hug Day on February 14 stands withdrawn," said Board's secretary, S K Dutta, in the withdrawal order, posted on the AWBI's website.

新德里：在包括网友和其他动物权利组织在内的各个方面的批评声中，印度动物福利委员会（AWBI）周五撤回了将2月14日当做“抱牛日”来庆祝的呼吁，称这是按照政府的指示进行的。

The Board, a statutory advisory body on animal welfare laws, had on February 6 appealed to cow lovers to celebrate February 14, coinciding with Valentine's Day, as "Cow Hug Day", noting that the Vedic traditions are almost on the verge of extinction due to progress of western culture over time.

“In view of the immense benefit of the cow, hugging a cow will bring emotional richness hence will increase our individual & collective happiness. Therefore, all the cow lovers may also celebrate February 14 as 'Cow Hug day' kee in mind the importance of mother cows and making life happy and full of positive energy,” said the Board in its general appeal, issued on Monday.

该委员会是动物福利法的法定咨询机构，于2月6日呼吁奶牛爱好者将2月14日与情人节同时庆祝为“奶牛拥抱日”，并指出，随着西方文化的发展，吠陀传统几乎濒临灭绝。

The elected Union Government at the Centre is totally responsible for the confusion created by AWBI in India urging people of India to celebrate February 14 as Cow Hug Day and calling it off the next day. This exposes the competent authority. Governance is not necessarily enmity; it is merely misused and made an occasion for enmity.The poor citizens caught in between are simply numbed in India.
