I’m a Thai-Chinese. I just went to Shanghai and nearby Cities and was surprised that many people there thought that we are Malaysians. They said Thai people must have dark skin. Some of them even went to Bangkok before. No offend at all, but just curious if they know about the huge number of oversea Chinese in Thailand who are Thai at heart not the PRC people who just settled here in recent years.

I think most Chinese do. I also think Chinese Thai is a weird term.
Historically the majority of Thai came from China. By this definition, they are all “Chinese”. Their relatives, known as Dai, still live in China today for making up around 1 million population if I remember it correctly. So the Chinese Thai in the Thai context actually refers to the Han migrants.
But still, that is also kinda messed up. Historically most of Han migrants have merged into the Thai identity by adopting the Thai names and customs, having marriages. This process was completed in the last century and these people are counted as Thai now. But there are also Han who preserve their Han identity and make up around 14% of the population in Thailand, according to the internet. So there is no clear line between Han and Thai. For example, maybe someone is genetical Han but considers himself Thai and vice versa.
Lastly, Han migrants, either still as Han or shifting to Thai now, have basically become the elite class in Thailand, including the Monarchy itself that has the Han blood. When I train Muay Thai in China, I met a Thai coach who told me that the business of Muay Thai in Thailand is basically run by a bunch of Han rich people. This suddenly makes sense for why Muay Thai has such successful marketing and popularity in China, compared with poorly marketed boxng, kickboxng, MMA.

Yes we do. To your surprise, what Chinese would not know is that they don’t know there are different ethnicities living in Thailand and most of them are not categorized as East Asian.
Basically, an average Chinese who had not been to any southeastern country and not interested in geopolitics would think that all neighboring countries except Russia, India would have the similar racial collection as China - just like South Korea or Japan. Yes, I know the Korean or Japanese are Korean Korean and Japanese Japanese, not Chinese Korean or Chinese Japanese, but you get the idea - they all look like East Asians, so there is no need to distinguish between the ethnicities(races).
Thailand is just like Japan or Korea in many Chinese’ mind no matter it locates in an opposite direction.
There is another trick of this Thailand matter - Thais are close relatives of Dai ethnicity group in China, they even share the same name. Although genetically and culturally speaking Thai people are closer to Zhuang Ethnicity group, but it doesn’t matter. you know what? Chinese may think Thailand uses a Chinese minority group’s name as the name of their country, this is enough to elaborate the close kinship of Thai people to a minority group of Chinese people.
I know the questioner might not be satisfied with this answer as I guess most probably the questioner intended to ask “if Chinese know there are Han Chinese descendants in Thailand”. But actually the “Han Chinese” idea doesn’t pop up immediately to an ordinary Chinese person as Chinese is a wider spectrum. We would then think, okay, wow, there might be many “Dais” in this “Dai”land, okay, that could be justified as a “yes” to the question.
BTW the answer for the intended question is, we are not much aware of that, but for the ones who know, they are all very glad that there is a rich and successful Han Chinese diaspora in Thailand. We are more surprised to know that redbull is not a Chinese enterprise.
A piece of unrelated information: ask a random Chinese who is poor in geography to name four East Asian countries in 10 seconds. Many would say China, Japan, south/North Korea, and Thailand. Some would say Vietnam instead of Thailand. Only a few would correctly answer Mongolia and the first three. LOL.

Of course we do. But not everyone knows about it since not everyone is interested in history. For example, many Chinese girls are fascinated about cosmetics and luxury bags but they even do not know where terra cotta warrior is .
The current royal family of Thai also has Chinese blood.
During Ming, Qing Dynasty and ROC period, Chinese immigrants moved to Thailand in droves.
Former prime ministers: Thaksin Shinawatra and his sister Yingluck Shinawatra are of Hakka Chinese descent and their great-grandfather is Chinese immigrant from Meizhou, Guangdong, China.
There are also some descendants from Chinese KMT armies in Golden triangle regions bordering Myanmar and Laos.
So Do Chinese people in China know that the Thai-Chinese exsts in Thailand?
Some do but some don’t. Most people are not concerned about it because it’s none of their business.

The Chinese know that the Dai people in China and the main ethnic group in Thailand are the same ethnic group. Little is known about Thai Chinese.
Most Chinese people know very little about Chinese in Southeast Asia, limited to the following:
Malaysia and Indonesia, these two are famous for the Chinese exclusion events in the last century;
Singapore, a country with a very dazzling Chinese ethnic group;
Northern Myanmar - drug trafficking, organ trafficking, fraud, in short a land of extrajudicial
马来西亚和印度尼西亚,这两个国家在上个世纪闹出了轰动世界的排华事件;
新加坡,是一个华人族群熠熠生辉的国家;

Yes we do. But the level of knowledge varies from people to people.
People’s knowledge of diaspora of their ethnicity outside the “mother countries” depends on frequency of mention of these topics during education and their interactions with these people.
Chinese textbooks indeed mention overseas (Han) Chinese people in courses like Geography and History. But it is often described very briefly or broadly so most Chinese people only know that Singapore has Chinese, Malaysia has Chinese or Indonesia has Chinese. But most Chinese people don’t know too much about the history, development and current situation of overseas Chinese people. Things on this topic that we can learn from primary and secondary education systems are very limited. More knowledge about Chinese diaspora needs to be accquired by further learning by ourselves or by direct interaction with these people.

Surely. The Thai royal family is Thai-Chinese. And, recently, there is a very very famous Thai-Chinese lady got a job in China.
However, we normally don't really think about this kind of linkage, as they already are quite localized, and they are a big part of Thai culture now.

I believe average Chinese people know very little about Thai-Chinese. (maybe should be called ‘Chinese(ethnicity)-Thai(citizenship)’)
But it is nothing unusual or surprising that Thailand has migrants from China, I guess almost every southeast Asian country has some migrants from China.
If you talk to some villager from a frontier province like Yun’nan, but not to someone living in the ‘central’ region of China, like Shanghai or Suzhou, you may get a quite different impression about their knowledge to Chinese migrants in southeast Asia.

Are Thai and Chinese people genetically related?
Yes, Thai people and Chinese people (Han and other minority groups) are indeed related, and quite closely.
The genetic ancestry of various ethnic Thai and minority groups of Thailand have been analyzed. It was revealed that they are all close to other Southeast Asians and East Asians, without much external influence.
Thai are a Kra-Dai ethnic group, Chinese (Han) are a Sino-Tiban (specifically Sinitic) ethnic group. Like other East Asians, Southeast Asians, and Siberians, Kra-Dai and Sino-Tibans too descended from a “Basal-East Asian” ancestor in Mainland Southeast Asia and Southern China.
Compared to other Eurasian samples, Thai cluster closely with other East- and Southeast Asians. The Thai people show a cline from overlap with Han Chinese, to more Khmer-like, which can be both explained by the historical expansion of Kra-Dai speakers from southern China, and the more recent migration of Han-Chinese.
Conclusion:
Yes, Thai and Han Chinese are closely related, genetically speaking. Thai are even closer to the Zhuang ethnic minority in southern China.

What percent of Thais have Chinese ancestry?
I think the questioner is trying to say how many of the Thais have Chinese ancestry among them.
To just say Chinese ancestry would cause a major misunderstanding.
That is that the Thai, the main ethnic group in Thailand, actually migrated from the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau in China. There are still in China now that remain local Dai people.
Today, it is generally accepted in historiography that the Tai originated from the Ailao people in the middle and upper reaches of the Lancang River. ailao people are one of the oldest ethnic groups in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau region. In the mid to late first century AD, the ailao moved west to the Tengchong Dam in the area west of the Nu River, and a large area of territory west of the Nu River was further developed. In the early tenth century AD, the Tai regime fell into disarray and the disempowered Tai began to migrate south and west. The Tai regime was restored in the Irrawaddy and Nu River valley areas.
In all seriousness, there are also subtle differences between the Dai in China and the Thai, the main ethnic group in Thailand. The Dai in China, by comparison, have the purest bloodlines, as the Dai who migrated south, that is, in Southeast Asia, all fused with the local Khmer people and have genes of other ethnic groups in them.
Thus, the Dai in China and the Thai in Thailand basically belong to the same ethnic group, and they share a common ancestor.
In China they are called Dai, in Thailand they are called Tai, in Burma they are called Shan, and in Laos they are called Lo, while in India the Dai people live mainly in Assam, where they are called by a different name than the previous ones, the Indians call them Assamese or Ahom.
