Coal India to import for first time in years as power shortages loom
NEW DELHI: State-run Coal India, the world's largest coal miner, will import the fuel for use by utilities, a power ministry letter seen by Reuters showed on Saturday, as shortages raise concerns about renewed power outages.
It would be the first time since 2015 that Coal India has imported the fuel, highlighting efforts by state and central offi als to stock up to avoid a repeat of April, when India faced its worst power cuts in more than six years.
"Coal India would import coal for blending on go nment-to-go nment (G2G) basis and supply ... to thermal power plants of state generators and independent power producers (IPPs)," the federal Power Ministry said in the letter dated May 28.
The letter was sent to all utilities, top central and state energy offi als including the Union coal secretary and the chairman of Coal India.
India is expected to face a wider coal shortage during the third quarter of 2022 due to expectations of higher ricity demand, stoking fears of widespread power outages.
The power ministry said in the letter the decision was taken after nearly all states suggested that multiple coal import tenders by states would lead to a confusion and sought centralised procurement through Coal India.
Why don't we use gobar gas plants? We have all the necessary raw materials. I am serious. Not even joking.
this action will lead to increase in power bills and add the woes of consumers who are already facing unbearable inflation.

Import of coal is the only solution.
The long term solution lies not in coal imports but in develo renewable sources of energy on a sustainable basis which has been talked about for decades. India has the competence in this field.

Long term solution to power shortages is hydroric generation, as it is renewable form of energy. As such we must reduce our ricity demand by controlling and reducing our population. No economy or pool of resources can support perennially increasing population. All must support our go nment to reduce population , as alone go nment efforts are not sufficient.
Privatization of coal is one of the greatest mistakes. Coal being exported out and then coming back at unthinkable cost. Who will be suffering?
..... hope would not see any power cut in September October.

‘ACHHE DIN AAYE KYA NAHI’
prime example of public sector mismanagement and mafia controls in the coal belts.
Countries all over the world are suffering from high energy and power costs because of the war in Ukraine. The price of oil has been hovering over USD 100 for a long time now. So fuel is expensive all over the world. This problem has not been created by Modi or BJP.

India's ricity accessibility index has increased from 94 in 2014 to 22 in 2020. That's what Modi did. And that's why coal is needed. Cope
good method to avoid confrontation with coal mafia and unions
other option will take time govt is doing to generate power from other sources but imported coal for recent crisis must be resolve
Not good for the environment

Massive demand for ricity cannot be handled by short term measures. Gas has become uneconomical and would cost 20 rs for a unit. Current power situation will impact Indias GDP grow ...
It's High time that we move towards solar and wind energy, which are available in plenty and also pollution free.
Sell local and import foreign-- Motto of current govt. Shame
Stop the coal import, go nuclear, wind, hydropower and solar, bogas, and perhaps natural gas. India must not use coal, as it is tempering with the eco-sy em.
Coal shortage is just the tip of the iceberg. As a matter of fact, everything has been deteriorating across the board in the country ever since Feku came to power in 2014. For instance, also for the first time in decades, our per capita income even falls behind that of Bangladesh and some African countries.
When Adani bought coal mines in Australia. Modi guaranteed over 7 billion loan.. Why ? Soon Modi is going to change India's name to Ambanistan and Adanistan....
