'In spirit of cooperative federalism': PM Modi targets states with high fuel prices, urges them to cut tax on petrol, diesel
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday flagged the issue of high fuel prices in some opposition-ruled states and urged these states to cut tax on petrol and diesel so as to provide relief to consumers.
"I request states to reduce VAT on fuel prices in the spirit of cooperative federalism," the PM said during the concluding remarks of his interaction with chief ministers over rising Covid cases in the country.
The Prime Minister said that the Centre had reduced excise duty last November to ease fuel prices and had also advised states to cut taxes.
"In order to reduce the burden of rising petrol and diesel prices, the central government reduced the excise duty last November. We had urged the states too to reduce their taxes. Some states reduced the tax and provided benefits to the consumers but some didn't do so," said PM Modi.
However, it was mostly the BJP-run states which slashed VAT by different margins last year, taking cue from the Centre. The Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi did it much later.
Naming the opposition-ruled states, PM Modi said, "Maharashtra, West Bengal, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu did not follow the advice of Central government and people in these states are burdened with price rise."
"High fuel prices in these states is an injustice to their residents and also harmful for the neghbouring states," PM Modi said.
In his remarks, Modi cited the example of Karnataka and Gujarat, both ruled by the BJP, saying they have suffered revenue loss of nearly Rs 5,000 crore and Rs 3,500-4,000 crore respectively by reducing VAT but they did so to help people. Their neighbouring states did not, he added.
Calling upon the opposition ruled states to act now, PM Modi said "I request these states to do now what they should have done in November. By reducing the VAT you can lower the burden faced by the residents."
"I am not criticising anyone but am praying to you for the welfare of people of your states ... I urge you to reduce VAT now even after a delay of six months to benefit people," he said, with chief ministers of most of these states listening.
How he forgot Oil bonds repayment or interest? Russian oil is cheaper but who stopped us to buy?,November excise duty reduction was for Vidhan sabha elections in 5 States as everyone knows.
Central tax is much less compared to the state govt tax.
In August 2014, the basic price was ₹48.55 per litre for petrol and ₹47.27 per litre for diesel. On November 4, 2021, the basic price of petrol was ₹48.36 per litre while that of diesel was ₹49.69 per litre. On August 1, 2014, the Union government taxes were ₹9.48 per litre on petrol and ₹3.57 per litre on diesel. At that time, the State government taxes were ₹15.67 per litre on petrol and ₹10.25 per litre on diesel, he said.
Paltry cut of Rs.5 from central cess duty on petrol diesel recently is a pittance.......
How you expect to have development if govt does not have money? 90% of you dont pay or worst, dont want to pay income tax, yet shout for benefits.

How do you know?
Ironically in Maharashtra Duty on imported liquor was reduced by 50% in November last year but VAT on petrol not reduced thanks to MVA Govt
Why not bring Petroleum under GST and have universal pricing across India
The opposition fellows have gone too far in the name of Modi hatred, they don't even know that they have become Anti -public.
The opposition ruled states are in dire straits and they will have to impose on other commodities to match the revenue loss. Otherwise, they would have done it by now taking into account the perennial problem of cascading impact on all other commodities. They are playing dirty politics and one of the ways to tackle it is to bring it under GST. then they will learn the lessons. It is high time explore oil resources within India or use your good offices to buy in lots at competitive prices.
Why he us not reducing central taxes..?
