We are in talks with IOC for 2036 Olympics, Mera best venue: IOA chief
AHMEDABAD: Indian Olympic Association (IOA) presi nt Narinder Batra on Saturday said the organization is in talks with the International Olympic Committee for a possible bid by India to host the 2036 summer games, and Ahmedabad's Mera stadium is the best venue for an opening ceremony.
After it was rebuilt to make it the world's largest cricket stadium, the Mera facility was renamed as 'Narendra Modi Stadium' by the Gujarat Cricket Association in February 2021.
"If someone asks me about the venue for the opening ceremony at present, then it is definitely going to be the Mera stadium," Batra told reporters here.
"There is no stadium better suited to host the opening ceremony of the Olympics (in India). I can't say what will happen by 2036.... (but) I will be proposing Ahmedabad as the venue for the opening ceremony," the IOA chief added. He was speaking to the media at an event organized by TransStadia, a city-based sports infrastructure firm.
"When you say opening ceremony, it means that athletics will also be played (at the same venue). And athletics is the biggest event (at the Olympics)," he said.
Olympic games can be hosted in three or four cities in India, and the IOA is in talks with the IOC about India's possible bid for 2036, Batra said. The chances of India getting the opportunity were b, he added.
Hosting olympics is no mean feat and involves spending billions of dollars. Rather focus on spending 1/10th of that on sports infrastructure and we will get more recognition for our country.
Well said. Our athletes go out on starvation diet and in India we do not have facilities for training. What is the point of hosting a Olympics where we have a poor show. With a fraction of the funds needed to host we can develop the infrastructure across the nation, start an IPL like program in Hockey and Foot ball, open several play grounds across the nation in every district and bring forth a generation of athletes that will be the envy of India.
Hosting of Olympic Games is waste of time & money . Tokyo lost Billions of Dollers, this time. Who is IOC banking on to foot the bill ??
Anyway Olympics is a useless investment that we all witnessed in Rio and Beig. Building new venues for the event is going to be a waste of money. If the infrastructure is already there like Tokyo, London Paris or Sydney then it is ok to host. Else investing billions in a town for a 2-3 week event is a criminal waste of money if those resources are going to be of no major use in future. No amount of short business generation can justify the long term losses.
Pls keep garbage off road in Guj cities...and potholes free Mumbai roads. By 2036..just to avoid shame from other foreign sports person visiting
India will lose all respect if it ever hosts the big games
We have one track and field gold (javelin) after 60 years. Our usual medals are in sh ting (that too mostly Bronze) which does not count as an athletic event. First improve sports performance in the country. We have not earned our place to host the Olympics and India's application has been rejected every time because of this reason - we don't have world class athletics in our country.
The Olympics is a waste of money and time and will suck out any money for development related purposes
India should stop daydreaming. It is impolite to say that it will never be possible in the next 100 years. India's Olympic gold medals are pitiful, the urban situation in India is very poor, and India's social security is very bad. India has no organizational capacity, hardware facilities and infrastructure construction efficiency is very low. In a word, overestimate yourself. India always likes to set some goals and completely forget its identity and ability.
India can't even handled 2010 Common wealth game. It was a great failure & shameful story of Indians. What's more to organize Olympics such big global event.
India is a poor and co ption ridden third world country with filth everywhere. No need for IOC to approach the international committee.

Build schools, meet basic needs of the people , spend money to improve country ctizens than dream about hosting olympics
great move. It will increase the sports culture in the country.
Athletes might refuse to come to India. Like Tennis players used to do earlier. The event will then be a damp affair. Avoid.
India now has a celebrated athlete in Neeraj Chopra. India won't cut a sorry figure now for the want of a suitable torch bearer.
India must host 2036 Olympics. Unless you dream big, even smalll things would not happen. Mera is the best suited Stadium, being World's largest cricket stadium.
india can attempt, but no use. ambition is needed but not at this level
Looking at the potholes in Mumbai, the atheletes will all go directly to hospital for back treatment
as it was 70 years ago india still controlled by foreign power! independence day is a joke! no country ever got free without fight!!
